HI
All I can tell you, as an ex body man, is that we found the only way to stop it permanently (other than replacing full sections) was to remove all the rot and fill with lead.
Ive been out of the trade for 12 years now but even when i was doing it there were very few bodyshops who really knew how to lead-fill properly. around here anyway.
Fibreglass paste will as you say hide it for a year but doesnt make economic sense if you plan on keeping the car.
One of the granada scorpios i had was the same and i got hold of some stainless wheel arch trims for it. I ground out the rotten bits and drenched the arches in acid to kill any remnants. i then glassed it, pumped it full of waxoyl and stuck the stainless mouldings on. I dont know if it worked as i never took the mouldings off again to check but it never  showed again while i had it anyway!
no doubt some poor owner further down the line took them off and half the wing fell off with it!  :D

If that helps?

Andy

Hi guys,

sorry to steer from mikes topic of rusty wheel arches but this does concern rust.

for the first time in owning my car I removed the battery to check for build up around the AUX fuse box. much to my horror I found something else instead, rust and lots of it!! since we have 2 scorp’s in the family I decided to check the condition of the other. not quite as bad but sure signs of rust. it appears that ford came up with the really good idea of welding a battery box onto the bulk head with rather large gaps underneath, perfect for dirt and leaf build-up which traps water! at some point I guess my car has had a leaking battery. I could see that the battery box was rusting away nicely but it was also beginning to eat away at the bulkhead. NOT GOOD! in a bid to prevent the bulkhead getting any worse, the only long term solution I could come up with was to remove the battery box (pig of a job!!!). this also gave me full access the bulkhead underneath. It looks like I got to it just in time. I’ve spent the last few weeks grinding out the rust. I’ve treated the whole area with rust eater, primed it, coated it with PVC under seal and sprayed wax oil over the top. The PVC under seal is used on newer cars on the sills as it sets like a hard shiny surface unlike the soft tar type under seal. HOPEFULLY I’ve prevented any more rust :) thankfully the Scorpio’s bulkhead is pretty flat around this area so a new battery box wasn’t hard to make.

Just remember, the battery cover is a god send to the Scorpio, but if you find the time, remove the cover and the battery and check for build-up underneath the battery box. use a coat hanger or something that you can use to drag any hidden material out. you may also consider removing the black water drainer flap that seems to hold more water than dispense it! a can of wax oil with a tube underneath and around the batt box may also be a good idea.

doing this simple task will save lots of time and cut fingers from cutting out the batt box like mine ;)

HTH everyone! right next job ;D
