Title: Engine Knock / Tap Post by martinctb on Mar 28th, 2004, 4:25pm Can i pick your brains just started my 1995 cozy to try and id a knock / Tap Load on my Cosworth engine, start her up and noise seems to be coming from he rear of the engine got under neath with my tube and listened around the sump but although i still could hear the knock it wasn't via the tube. So spanner in hand i stripped the air intake system off the top and removed the right hand rocker cover fully expecting to see a broken valve spring or damaged cam but nothing, any ideas. The knock/tap is like its when a certain cylinder is in action. Also i looked as best as i could at the crown of the piston seemed fine. Martin |

Title: Re: Engine Knock / Tap Post by Steve_S on Apr 14th, 2004, 10:41pm The cats can rattle like hell when failing, mine has been doing it for months, sounds like a timing chain rattle. So any rattles from the rear of engine, check the cats first 24v has 2 cats, other models have 1, not sure about the 2.9 12v |

Title: Re: Engine Knock / Tap Post by Wayniac on Apr 15th, 2004, 8:22am cheers Steve. I have the 2.9 24v. is there a quick fix to temp' cure this rattle? |

Title: Re: Engine Knock / Tap Post by Steve_S on Apr 15th, 2004, 9:02am If its the cat you will need to replace it. The exhaust section from the cat will need to be removed and checked for pieces blocking the pipe. The only temporary fix would be to knock the plates out of the cat and refit, however this would put your emmissions over the legal limit, also with the work involved you need to concider whether its even worth concidering this. The best option would be to replace it. |

Title: Re: Engine Knock / Tap Post by martin_rowe on Apr 16th, 2004, 7:37am Re: Engine Knock / Tap A couple of years ago I came accros a 24v with an unusual engine knock, It wasn't the cats as they make a very chaicteristic noise, it sounded as though it was coming from the rear of the engine, I eventually traced it to a broken camshaft brearing cap bolt !. Cats usually rattle, very often you can check by getting underneath the car and hitting the front pipe with your hand close to the cat, you will usually here the brick rattle easy as there is no other noise. just a thought. |

Title: Re: Engine Knock / Tap Post by Wayniac on Apr 16th, 2004, 8:04am cheers guys :D £220 sounds a lot better. still a lot for the size and it isnt going to do anything for me personally but its better than £305. |
