Ive just recently developed an intermittent fault, when i put my foot down, like all the way, the pedal goes hard and springy about half way down and nothing happens. i jab it a few times and it will suddenly clear and be fine. It doesnt seem to do it when the engine isnt running and ive checked the cable, the pedal and the throttle linkages and all seem fine.
Could it be the secondary throttle valve sticking? anyone else had this?

It could well be a fault on the traction control unit. Try turning off the traction control system too see if that makes any difference.

If it feels like the pedle is trying to push back up then it will more than likely be the traction unit. I know others have have had thesame problem so you should be able to get some help diagnosing this.

I know what you are saying, but its not trying to push back like when the tc cuts in, its like a stiff point half way, you know when you press your pedal down theres a slight resistance when you press it far enough to kick down? well its like there where theres a stiff part which sometimes it will go past and sometimes wont,

watching the linkage its at the point where the secondary throttle valve gets opened by the linkage of the primary one and its definitely more pronounced with the engine running with the car stood than it is with the engine off

if that helps.

whats been the remedy for when it is the traction control at fault?

Hi Andy

Is the vacume pipe which you disconnected tight. The small black one which you put the 10K boost in. I had the same problem and found that I didnt fit the pipe tight enough.
BTW the fault only happend in the morning when the engine was cold.
But all is fine now. Silly me Fancy not tightining the pipe back up. ;D ;D

funny you should say that! I dont know, I will check that tomorrow. it should be ok as it had those awkward spring loaded clips on which are normally pretty tight and im fairly sure i pushed the pipe all the way on. however, stranger things have happened at sea so ill have a look, might have split it or something.

Well i had a look at the pipe and it seems ok, the rubber is a bit hard but seems to seal ok.
However, what i did find, was that the secondary throttle  valve, (the bottom one) was stuck solid and it needed some fair force to 'crack' it open. once opened it was fine. this is obviously what is causing the problem but the thing is, this is only when the engine is running. with the engine off its as free as the proverbial bird! its almost as if the suction from the engine is holding it jammed shut.  would a spray of carb cleaner round the valve help? is it ok to spray carb spray in there? I could pull the aforementioned pipe off which goes in just in front of the throttle and it would get sucked through the valves....wouldnt it?
(dont know about you but the stp carb spray? nothing special, i know cellulose thinners when i smell it!)

Im convinced this is simply a mechanical problem with the valves and nothing more sinister, its just annoying when you boot it to overtake and nothing happens.

This is weird! I had a similar problem on 2.0L but at the top of travel,resulting in very interesting driving style.

The oddest bit was when the engine was turned off there was no resistance at all!

Putting 2+2 together I cleaned the idle valve and throttle plates and problem went away!

I think it is related to airflow and air pressure difference either side of throttle plates.

Thata all i can think of too but you would think that when the main valve was wide open there wouldnt be that much suction on the secondary one, not enough to jam it shut anyway.
Since i took off the pipe to check it and replaced it i havent had the problem since so maybe Alan was right and that it was just badly fitting. If it does start doing it again I'll clean the throttle plates.

Hi there,

I have had this problem before.  I have a 2.9i Ultima. It happened to me as I was joining the M25 doing about 70mph at the end of the slip road.  It took a while to kick the accelerator back to normal.  I consider myself lucky on that occasion.  

The linkages that control the airflow into the injector had siezed.  I took off the two pipes and give it a good clean.  That involved taking off a couple of jubilee clips and about 8 bolts. Inside of the unit it was thick with a treacley type substance that was solidifying (with the heat ?) around the inside of the linkages which caused it to stick.

It happened once more at slow speed and I stripped it down including the airflow into the injectoirs and cleaned it throughout.  I also but a bottle of Redex in and another one since.  

Thankfully I have not had the problem since, that was 10k ago. At the first sign of a sticky accelerator I strip it down and check it.  So far its remained clean.

Mine wasnt sticking open, thankfully! it was the second throttle valve that was sticking shut so i only had half power if that.
since i did the pipe though ive given the car a thorough blast and it hasnt happened again so hopefully thats the end of it.
I would hate to have it stuck at full throttle! dont bear thinking about!!!

A leak when you put the pipe back on. Glad all is sorted now anyway  ;D ;D ;D
