Post by Dai_H on Mar 30th, 2004, 2:21pm
when moving off after selecting drive on my 2.0 16v auto, there a thud as drive engages.

If i select drive, wait a second, them move off, everything is fine and smooth.

Car has done 185k miles,

Sounds like your autobox is getting a little slow and when your waiting for it to engage you rev slightly, as the revs increase the gearbox hits drive and there is instant presure to the driveshaft causing a bang.

Dont do this to often as this will probley damge the box further.

Hi I would advise to check condition of g/box oil and check level, The oil should be a red colour if other than this, smell oil for burning. For correct procedure on level first get the the gear box oil at working temperature park up apply handbrake select P and then all positions carry this out, do this three times then check for correct level, it just could be that it needs topping up and problem solved and forgive me if I am trying to teach my granny how to suck eggs and if you have already checked on this then please forgive any way good luck and keep us informed .

or propshaft U/J's getting worn. had that on a mk3. you put it in drive and it engages but because your foot is on the brake it tries to turn the propshaft but cant turn the wheels so makes the clunk. once you release the brake to move off the play has already been taken up so no clunk.

just a thought

Check the Torx bolts on the rear drive shaft havent worked lose. Recently had this problem with my cosi I left it a while and now I have to fit a new cv joint. So better do it sooner rather than later.

Oh now see what we've started! everybody wants one! ;D

It was a chance find in an idle moment when i was playing with the odometer button. if you hold it down for ten seconds it will enter a diagnostic mode where every press will give out different info. I noticed that on the very first screen, amongst other things the word 'service' was displayed and i wondered if it was something which could be brought into operation.

after that Alan became most dejected as he hasnt got one
(partly because his is a much slower car and he lives on a hill)  ;D

I just know im going to pay for saying that!!! ;)

Thanks for the advice guys.
I will check all the above suggestions.

I never let it thud now, so dont worry. I always let it take up the slack and then move off. I drive it really slow everywhere anyway  ::) because i like to relax in it.

Thanks again...

I agree with the Big Boss Dai, cleaning the maf is a simple job costing no money and may well solve your problems. john.n ;)

I had the same problem last year along with a lot of erratic gear changes.Cleaning the MAF had superb results and as others have said its free. Just be careful not to damage the sensors. Use carb cleaner dont physically touch the sensors. I am doing this routinely at each service. Hopefully this will stop the clunking, I remember it well.
