Help please guys , my 95 24v was left parked up for 4 days ,on returning i found i had no ,indicators stop lights headlights or climate ,and a couple of other things,also no speedo ,on getting home i discovered fuse 17 7.5amp had blown fitted new fuse all ancillaries back except speedo ,however i have also lost all gear changes car starts fine goes into reverse ok ,goes into first ok ,but steering is heavy and car will not change up ,i have stripped aux fuse box all ok ,removed all relays and fuses from main box ,cleaned them up and replaced ,and have tried a different battery ,any other advise would be appreciated car was fine before being left

hi there

the speedo gets it's feed from the vvs which is on the side of the gearbox...about £30 from fmd. as for the heavy steering, power steering pump gone, low fluid?

ps. if it's not getting a feed, then the ecu won't be able to tell what speed the car is going, thus won't want to change gears etc. (i think that's right!)

yep. id plump for vss too, usually affects the trip computer and the cruise control as well, both of which rely on knowing the vehicle speed

trip computer seems to be working ok are these things none for sudden failure and i mean working one instance and not another ,also car was changing gear ok without speedo working until i fitted the fuse

I had a mk3 scorpio with no speedo but i found if i thumped the dash above the speedo it would come back on! not that that probably helps!

well it was only a Mk3!
(i sold it to a guy at work for 325 and he went straight home and sold it to his mother for 500!!)

it was a nice car but the engine was rubbish, he was the only person at work i would have sold it to and not had a conscience!

(not that i have one anyway, just before you say it!)

Colin,
Yes, it sounds as though the electrics suffered a surge when it was restarted. This blew the fuse and probably also the VSS sensor. You find the connection to this on the drivers side of the autobox and you may have to undo and slide back the heatshield to get to it and perhaps unhook the exhaust and pull it to one side - depending on engine.
There is a single bolt holding it in, and the VSS connection is clipped into a retainer. Undo the bolt, remove the VSS and the connection and fit the new one.

Eric thanks for that ,today i have completly stripped and rebuild both fuse boxs ,the main was completly drenched and corroding ,although i did leave covers of the other night when it rained i would think this has been going over a little while ,however the symptons now are no speedo at all ,if car does change gear albeit very badly the o/d light flashes ,if i turn of ign then turn it back on again the o/d light stays out but car wont change gear ,the fuel pump relay that i understand feeds the vss has been getting very hot around one of the diodes although the diode has not failed,i am pretty sure the rewiring work has not failed mines rerouted remember ,so a new vss is on order £58.plus vat from fmd

Ok new vss sensor fitted this evening when first driven there was still no upward changes ,turn ignition off and restart car then changes gear all beit with the o/d light flashing then all of a sudden steering goes light gears change o/d light still flashes and speedo starts going between 0-30mph all on its own stop car keep engine running and speedo continues to jump about ,please any other suggestions greatly received

Colin,
I don't know what the other guys on here think, but recently we had an owner whose speedo wasn't working and had odd symptoms like this, and he found that his battery was failing. See http://forum.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1082390691;start=0#0
Have your battery discharge tested, and your alternator checked for load.
