Title: loom probs?
Post by Goldwinger on Apr 18th, 2004, 12:04pm
My 24v auto is slowly packing up I have had a look through the files on the site and seem to have probs with my loom
OD flashing
Rough gear shifts
Jumping in and out of drive
I had a bit of a look yesterday and there is antifreeze getting into the loom under the front of the inlet manifold. I will take it off today and have a look at the wiring.

Before you strip it down i would get yourself a chair and large brandy ready because if yours is anything like mine was you will need it ,as you will more than likely find that the insulation has broken down and you will need to splice in many new cables carefully best of luck

Ditto,

Just finished repairing mine this weekend, thankless job all down to Ford using depolymerising wire in the engine loom.

In the end I gave up taking the entire PCM loom out and worked mainly on the worst affected section next to the cats heatshield, splicing in new wire where the insulation on a wire had gone brittle (or in a couple of cased broken off the copper).

After making sure everything worked I rewapped the loom using self-amalgamating tape and then finished off with additional protection in the form of some 25mm conduit split and fitted over the areas most prone to heat soak.

The only real answer is to pick up a post 06/96 loom and replace the whole lot.

Thanks guys ;D
I spent a happy few hours in the garage to day took of inlet manifold and injection stuff. Found that the water manifold that the top hose goes onto had corroded and that was were the water was leaking, also one of the “O” rings had been leaking Took of the insulation of the loom under the water manifold up to the back of the engine. At the front of the engine there were a number of wires were the insulation was shot. Next I will splice in some new cables into the loom and try to get hold of a new water manifold and a set of “O” rings. The joy of old cars.
