Title: software updates
Post by sg_frost on Apr 21st, 2004, 8:33pm
What are the benefits of having the software updated on my car, how much does it cost?

Hi Mate
I went into my local Ford dealer last weekend to enquire about this......the service manager who owns a Scorp told me that he really shouldnt tell me but they'd only done one a few weeks earlier and the owner wasnt that impressed with the result ? he hadnt even bothered doing his own, and thought that mine being a 96 car would probably already have been done but they wouldnt know until they put it on the WDS ? and that would cost £30 + VAT, i got the impression he was telling me that this was a waste of money without actually telling that ! maybe other people have had it done and would highly recommend it but i can only tell you what i have experienced myself

regards  ;)

I had mine done a few weeks ago. my fmd said that they changed from fds2000 to wds2000 sometime around 96 (which mine is) and if it was the fds he wouldnt have bothered as apparently they had a lot of connection probs. mine turned out to be the wds2000 so he updated it. must say i didnt notice a great deal of difference, maybe a little better on the bottom end if anything.  He didnt charge me anything but i kinda know the guy.

I could do with knowing a good friendly ford dealer like that, but having in the past done all my own servicing and repair work i find it difficult going in and paying them a stupid amount of money to do something that i can do myself for next to nothing.......
maybe now i own a scorp i might have to start building a few bridges ? ...........but i do hope not...........and maybe with the help of this site i wont have to.

Guys,
It's amazing how much BS the supposed experts in FMDs can muster when it comes to the Scorpio.
The Update is written up on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pcmupdate.htm - mine was the first to be updated and I told Steve C about it.
If you look at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/revisions.htm you'll see every engine get a revision in engine programming - every time each engine was revised it was to fix a programming parameter that was less than satisfactory. For the 24V I jumped 3 revisions for the new version, HD to HG.
Whether from FDS2000 or WDS makes no difference - either machine is simply a programming/diagnostic device that erases the EECV PCM (powertrain control module) see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/eecv.htm and reprograms it with the new instruction set. In fact the early WDS had some connection problems with our EECV, not the FDS2000.  ::)
On my October 1995 24V the idle was improved and the TCC and gear change scheduling changed subtly. The most noticeable change was the first-gear thump into second - this happened when you accelerate hard from stationary and then lift off the accelerator suddenly - the gearbox used to 'thump' into second. It now slurs the change down to second. Other gear changes are smoother, right up to 140mph, and now I never feel the gearbox 'thump' into gear and I used to before.
Worth it? Well, I thought so. More importantly, the programming was revised for a reason, just the same as any other TSB, so it seemed silly not to take advantage of it and fix whatever problem had been identified.
The main problem has always been finding a technician who knows how to do it !

I've asked two garages here so far, and one asked what is WDS and the other said there are no updates and asked me 'are you mad?' mmmmm >:(.....I explained this website and he just ignored me. sod it.
