Title: Creaking Leather Post by sidnfly on Apr 26th, 2004, 9:03pm My P reg ultima 24v is a pleasure to drive but as the weather gets dryer the leather seems to have got so loud its drowning out the radio (well almost). I have tried regular use of auto glym cleaner but it makes no difference. It has been said I am a bit obsessive about every rattle and creak but being obsessive is what men do best. Any ideas. It looks like I have the newer type seats that have velour on the edges to help reduce creaking, shame it doesnt work. |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by Badboytunes on Apr 26th, 2004, 10:34pm I havent seen seats with velour down the sides. Good idea tho. However my car (same as yours) creaks and it comes from the drivers seat rubbing on the centre console. I just turn my cd up louder ;D ;D ;D Cheers Nick |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by sidnfly on Apr 27th, 2004, 10:01pm Thanks bad boy I have pushed both front seats far enough back to stop that happening. It is also the back seats and sometimes the boot cover complaining. I hear that eric suggested fitting rubber washers to the ends of the boot cover so I will do that but still hte creaking persists. Is it creaking leather or get velour and have them filled with dog, horse and cat hair. Life is such a trial. |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by Steve_S on Apr 29th, 2004, 2:20pm Mine has velor sides also. Is it the leather creaking due to it drying out? You can get leather conditioners which put oils back into the leather which may help. My drivers seat creaks a little but it is not a major problem and I think leather is a creaky material especialy as it ages, also saging springs, any loose joints etc will make it worse. |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by Baz on Apr 30th, 2004, 9:56pm OK, here's one, listen very carefully....i will type thees onlee once!! Go to local market and buy a strip or piece of black felt. Then go to local B&Q and buy a roll of double sided tape. apply double sided tape to back of felt and then cut off a strip about 6 inches long by about 1 inch wide. Tilt back the drivers seat so it is nearly horizontal and apply the tape backed felt to the side of the centre console near the top of the box bit. It sticks out further than the rest of the box. Result...a lot less creaking. Repeat on other side. I found that the leather piping on the drivers seat rubs on this beacause the sides of the seat and the side of the armrest cover on late cars are velour and so the piping and box come into contact. Just my tip Baz |

I will let you into a secret, Its not really working. Perhaps i will buy a lexus and see how that gets on! |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by allante on May 5th, 2004, 6:40am Just as an aside, I recently bought a new leather suite, in the process the guy was explaining abou tcleaning it and we mentioned hide food, he said that never to use it or anything oil based on a leather suite as it was untrated leather, but on a car he said it would do no good as the leather had a type of laquer on it and it was this laquer cracking that caused the typical type of splits found in old cars and not the leather. once the laquer had cracked it allowed dirt and oils to get into the crack and deteriorate the leather causing it to split. he suggested nothing more than mild soapy water. If thats of any help to anyone (courtesy of DFS!) |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by Steve_Trebs on May 5th, 2004, 2:00pm Further to this interesting topic - Creaking Leather - I have only one thing to ad... while driving pull the seat belt tight and listen........ ........ ........ is it silent. Mine had a similar problem - creaking and rattling - and it turned out to be the seat belt buckle on the seat! Just a thought! Mind you the "Blue Peter" bit sounds like fun! ;D |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by sidnfly on May 5th, 2004, 8:03pm Your right the isolators work well on the boot cover housings but sadly doesnt do a lot for the seats ps neither does the bubble wrap. |

Title: Re: Creaking Leather Post by sidnfly on May 8th, 2004, 5:49pm Dart, you just dont realise how tough life can be driving the 24v scorpio. You will i am sure be horrified to know the 1997 Ultima Estate does not even have the courtsey lights under the doors. Also it does not have climate control, one has to make do with just air conditioning, what greater trial can one be subjected to? |
