Title: tired engine.....
Post by mcenner on May 4th, 2004, 11:22am
Hi!
I have a -97 Scorpio 2.3 (96000 km) which have a very(!) strange behaviour. It starts as a clock but after a few minutes I get problems when trying to accelerate. Nothing happends for a few seconds but then it disappears. I have recently changed the sparking plugs and also the air filter. What can be wrong? Any ideas?

It would be great if someone have any ideas what can be wrong!

Thanks!

Mats,
It sounds as though you're describing a flat spot - a lack of acceleration which suddenly takes up after a delay.
The causes can be many. From the first, clean the MAF, just to make sure this is sending proper signals, see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm
and then check the fuel cut off loom - the dohc engines are all prone to cracked insulation on these wires - see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm

If this doesn't help, you need to consider an OBD lead so you can check out the sensors, see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obdindetail.htm
failing HO2S sensors can cause flat spots but they can't be checked without connecting through the obd port.

Eric
Im currently having a few probs regarding sensors. My bottom end is fairly sluggish but after 3000 revs it goes like a good un. I know that the 24v exhibits this effect to a certain degree but i think mines a bit worse. I have an obd lead and it is showing a fault in bank 1 sensor 1 which is the pre cat HO2s sensor (P1131). I have tried checking everything suggested such as wiring, connectors etc and all is ok. I have cleaned the maf but its like the first half of accelerator travel is really poor but the last half is great. Does this sound like the sensor itself? I dont mind buying a new one but didnt want to buy one if its not going to make a difference.
