Post by ajs on May 5th, 2004, 12:17pm
after some great advice i am now cleaning the MAF do you think i should change the air filter also in the top left hand corner there is a small area that has a pipe coming into the air box from the engine  this was full of thick oil is this normal????

Start the engine, remove the oil filler cap and hold your hand over the filler hole. There will probably be a little pressure  being blowen out of the hole but if this is exsessive then the problem is engine wear.

Follow the pipe back to the breather on the near-side rocker cover. Pull out and clean the breather, piping etc. I generaly use parafin for the job, allow to dry before refitting. keep a close eye on it to see if there are any more problems. If the filter is dirty or is past its service date then change it. If not and there is only a small contaminated area then should be OK.

Hi I recently found oil as you describe but I also found a small filter in a slot where the pipe enters the air filter.
I am unsure why this small filter should be there or of its importance. Any comments!
Dennis

AJS,
The small pipe leading to the air cleaner box in the crankcase evacuation tube is designed to draw fumes from the interior of the engine and burn them in combustion. (It is unlawful for crankcase fumes to reach atmosphere)
The foam is there to prevent very small droplets of oil contaminating the air filter and reducing air flow to the engine - it's quite normal to find it thick with oil over a long period - it's done its job. It may well fall to peices if you try to clean it - cut a small peice of cleaning sponge and use that instead when you change the air filter.
This pipe can cause an unmetered leak to the inlet if the oil filler cap is loose or the dipstick is not fully home.

HI  All

Thanks for the advice Ive ordered a new little filter piece £1.30 ish
Ive cleaned the MAF made no difference to my gearbox problem but maybe the fact that the exhaust manifold is cracked isn't helping  I've  another one on it's way.
I've now ordered filters from Fordparts uk from the link,
great service and my cozzie booked in the garage next week can't wait

Eric, Surely a leak via the crankcase breather would be BEFORE the MAF,and would therefore be taken into account...........wouldnt it?

Thinking of which, the last time I had my oil filler cap off with the engine running the blow back was quite noticeable! Oh well,as long as it lasts another 10-15K I will be happy.
