Title: Help! Sunroof isn't closing
Post by St_George on May 10th, 2004, 9:31pm
Hello everyone,
I seem to have a bit of a problem here, if anyone can help me out, I'll be much obliged.  I have a 1997 24V Scorpio Ultima and about an hour ago the sunroof refused to close for me. It slides right back open and closes again except for the last couple of inches. It is stuck fast and I cannot shift it for love nor money. So I will now be driving around in my Scorpio with a semi open sunroof until I can get it to the garage, unless anyone has any ideas that is.

Cheers,

Paul

hi there

is it catching on the pop up wind deflector? or try pulling the cover (blind) along as the glass slides. DON'T try and force it with the motor. the gearing in made out of plastic!

Hi Paul

If I remember, The sunroof can be manually closed.

All you need to do is remove the plastic shroud that contains the open and close switch and the interior light. Using a sharp implement, the interior light will prise out. this will reveal two screws. undo and release the cover. you should now see the sunroof motor. Using something like pliers the motor can be turned manually to close the sunroof.

The most probable cause for the sunroof not to close could be swelling to the seal or rust to the guide plates. this causes the metal to expand and prevent the sunroof from closing. check these accordingly.

HTH, let us know how you get on mate

It doesn't seem to be catching on anything Andrew. It's really quite a strange one. As I said, it will slide back all the way no problem. Then I go to close it and it closes fine until about six inches from the end and then stops. I press the button again and it continues to close up until about two inches from the end and it doesn't move anymore from there no matter how many times I hit the button. Clapped out motor maybe? But it seems to be fine on opening and most of the closing.

hi there

something must tell it to stop when it's fully closed. yours is stopping to soon, then when you press again it move a bit more. could that be the movement for the tilt operation? everything is out of alignment? as i said not sure what makes it stop. maybe something on the wire? worth trying what danny said, just be carefull. ;)

Hi Andrew,

think you might be right here mate. it could be that the plastic gearing has jumped a couple of teeth. it doesn’t sound like a motor problem

One other thing to check is the sunroof seal. If it is a little rusty, it raises up where the join is at the back of the glass. If this is too raised up, it could be catching on the overlap of metal from the hole in the roof.

Worth checking

Hi All, My sunroof is opening/closing ok but I am aware of a little rust within the frame the glass sits in which I could do with accessing and giving a little attention to. I have just noticed recently the seal at the rear is starting to raise slightly as BAZ had mentioned. When I get time and weather permits I could do with removing the sunroof. Does anybody know how this is done? looks a bit complex to me.

Yes it is possible to remove the sun roof
Open the roof fully and remove the screws around the top and the whole unit then lifts out.. make sure you do not mark the roof paintwork.. well worth masking off.. but quite and easy job..... So I am realiably informed!

Hello everyone,
Sorry about the delay, I've been a bit busy. Got the car into the garage and they sorted closing the sunroof no problem. Apparently it is the motor that is playing up and  its somewhat pricey for a new one (£270 from ford to be exact). Anybody have any idea where I could get hold of one a little cheaper? Not the easiest item to come by I suppose but you never know.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul
You should get one of these no trouble, I have one but have offered it to a guy already. As Snoopy said same motor as in the old Granny, I have only seen 1 different. Look to pay a tenner, don't let on how much Ford wants.
