Title: Starting Problem
Post by roth on May 10th, 2004, 9:59pm
???
Hi
I have a 1996 2 litre 16 valve Automatic Scorpio. Last summer I had problems starting it when the weather was hot. When the key was turned, the ignition came on but the starter did not turn.  I replaced the key and everything seemed fine until now. During the past week I have tried to start the car when the weather has been warm and the car has been shut up. When I turn the key the ignition comes on and --nothing. If I open all the windows and sunroof and leave it to cool down for half an hour it starts fine.

Hi Roth

wow this is a strange one!!!

have you noticed any strange behaviour from the LED on top of the dash? Do you have a battery cover?

Three things, firstly check the condition of the battery terminals especially the negative pole (Pay particular attention to the small black thin wire bolted to the negative side) this powers the PATS immobilising system.
secondly, the LED on top of the dash is used by the PATS immobilising system and will flash very rapidly if the non starting problem is due to the immobilising system.
thirdly, open the boot/hatch and check that the fuel cut off button (Red button) is fully depressed.

Hi Danny
Thanks for the advice. I have checked the battery terminals and they seem OK. Yes I have a cover. I have checked the fuel cut off switch. It seems OK. I am not sure about the LED flashing or not as I had no problems today - probably because it was much cooler. Is it possible this intermittent problem which only happens when warm could be caused by a faulty key? As I said I replaced the key last summer and the problem seemed to disappear until now.
