Title: overfueling,not starting
Post by paxman on May 18th, 2004, 6:21pm
Hi,I own a kit car fitted with a 2.9 V6 Scorpio engine from a J reg car. This car had been standing for 2 years. The problem is as follows,It started up first time and sounded OK,trouble was it was running far too rich the CO2 level was about 10.5. I hadnt got a clue as to the problem! Called round a man with a van full of tuning gear,he reckoned he was a Fuel Injection specialist. Many hours and pounds later he gave up.The strange thing was that he tried another 2.9 ECU, same result, tried a 2.0 ECU and the co2 level came down to normal but it was missing on 2 cylinders.Since then another mechanic has had a go and it now will not start at all, Anybody out there with any bright ideas. I am now desperate as I have a man that wants to buy it.

Paxman,
It sounds like the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail has jammed. This overpressurises the INJectors and floods the engine. See http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelreg.htm - this is a later engine buts gives you an idea - the fuel rail for your engine is similar.

Can't think of anything else that could overfuel the engine. HTH

BTW, what kit car is the engine in?

Thanks Eric_R  will investigate the pressure regulator, but still cant fathom why it would run OK on a 2 litre ECU. In answer to your question about the type of Kit Car , it is a Royale Sabre, a thirties looking grand tourer. This is the second one I have owned, the first being powered by the old 2.3 V6 which ran like a gold watch despite having done 130,000 miles! This one has done 32,000 miles and runs like a pig!

Ah yes, the Sabre. Excellent car - one of the best kits there is - provided it's built properly.

Better take off that 2.0 ECU - the injector pinouts are different from 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder engines and you may damage the ECU. Probably the engine started with the 2.0 ECU because only 4 injectors were working and it brought the fuelling down but you probably blew the ECU since then - or perhaps the spark module.

Still think you need to check the fuel rail pressure if you can find a test valve on the rail - I can't remember if the Granada has one or not. If it has the pressure should not be any more than 2 bar. If you can't check it change the pressure regulator.

Next try to read the STAR codes from the ECU. If it's not firing now there must be some error code to explain it.

Really, you're off topic here - this site deals with the later Scorpio 95-on. You need the http://www.granada-enthusiasts.org/ site for any more help.

Good luck with the car.

It sounds like MMT fouling in the Fuel Regulator or fouling in the injectors themselves (possible). After sitting for a few years it's quite possible.
