Hi there,

Driving home today in my 95 24V I was doing a steady 50 when all of a sudden there was a sharp noise that came from the engine and an instant loss of power. The car stalled and I pulled over. The car did start again but sounded as rough as I've ever heard a car with excessive vibration and very erratic idle. It was possible to move the car very slowly forwards on to a towing bar but there was practically no power at all.

What can possibly have happened to cause such a sudden breakdown?? Any ideas appreciated.

I wouldnt wish it on you but it does sound like a timming chain.

Yeah I agree with JohnJ. Sounds like your running on half a engine. Mega money to get it sorted unless your handy with a spanner. How many miles have you got on your clock if you don't mind me asking?

Since you were able to start the engine again, you can rule out oil pressure, cooling, EEC system, and Fuel.

Yeah, sounds like you lost a bank and snapped a timing chain or belt. Count yourself lucky you have a DOHC engine. The valves most likely won't touch the pistons, but on my 12 valve, all the valves will be bent to hell.

Simple fix, but scary as hell, eh? :P

WHAT!? It's only a timing chain! It could be and entire top end of an engine, dude!

It's an 8 hour job, for sure, but it's pretty straightfoward. No worries, kay?

Thanks for the replies. I've got 97400 miles on the clock. If one of the timing chains has gone, will my FMD be able to confirm this by looking at the data from the EEC5? Dont want to shell out a fortune on exploratory work just to confirm that the car is history. Presumably I would be looking at a minimum of £1500 for this kind of repair.

mine went as you described about a year ago chain did not break but tensioner broke up chain jumped a cuople of cogs on nearside bank result 24 new valves and total top end rebuild inc camshaft around £2.8k in parts about £800 labour ,sorry to be bearer of bad news but these are bloody expensive when they break ,the advice given to me was get a s/h engine but i still think you would need to do work to used lump so just as well do your own up ,or consider getting rid of it,best of luck

OY! Keep yer shirt on! Might be a simple fix for you but for some members out there (someone couldnt even find his gearbox dipstick!) it would be a frightening prospect. Me,I'd love it,be in there up to my neck in spanners and oil. (dude?) :D
