Title: Leak in driver footwell - HELP!
Post by ediblehedge on Sep 10th, 2004, 6:28pm
Hi,

Just got home from a 150 mile journey in my 95 Ultima 2.9 12v estate and noticed some fluid in the drivers footwell. It has soaked through the over matt and is very wet underneath. I'm assuming that it's coming from the floor since the roof is dry!

It doesn't seem to smell or feel greasy to touch, but can anyone help point me in the right direction.

I'd rather go to the garage armed with at least some knowledge. I've searched on the forum but not found anything.

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

Cheers

Phil

Just had a better look over the car and there's also 'liquid' in the passenger footwell, it just hasn't soaked through the overmat yet.

Taking the mat and carpet out revealed that the layer beneath this and above the floor - a kind of foamy isulating type material - I'm sure it has a technical name! - is soaking wet.

I've checked all the fluid levels in the engine bay and nothing is considerably lower than when I last checked.

Any ideas on what I can check for?

Many thanks

Phil

Thanks for a great site -

Hi there,

Almost certainly the water is coming from the air-con unit. It normally drains away via drain holes but these get blocked up. The was some info on the site about this but with the recent problems I'm not sure if it's still there.

Thanks Thunderchild.

Now that makes more sense - first car with Air-Con and was failing to dawn on me that this is the most likely cause of water in the car.

I assume that if I turn off the A/C this should solve it short term and then I can go hunting for drain holes.

Forgot to ask - do I need to do anything to dry out the water I've collected so far or should it be ok to just leave it to dry?

Cheers

One tip for you... make sure you don't have a hot engine. If you do, you'll probably burn yourself reaching around the back to get at the drain tubes.  ;)

And if you feel the water as it trickles down into the footwell, if its ice cold, then this is definitely what the problem is.

Nice easy fix though. Sorted mine when I had the same problem.

;D ;D ;D  Yup, I can confirm that cleaning out the little valves in the drain tubes is the problem, as long as the water does not have antifreeze in it!!

When I removed the valves from the tubes, water ran out.  Both valves were full of a black gunge.

Not any longer, and dry mats are the order of the day.
