Title: Instrument Lights - Dud !
Post by phuturephantasy on Sep 22nd, 2004, 10:52am
The instrument lights that illuminate the speedo/tacho etc dont come on anymore - happened suddenly - all the warning lights still work and the sidelights/headlights etc still come on but my cd player which normally dims itself automatically when the lights are turned on doesn't dim itself anymore either - checked all the fuses and they all look ok - is there a relay involved that may have gone or any fuses elsewhere -

Hi phuturephantasy,

this sounds very much like the actual switch itself. I know its common sense to presume the switch is OK because all the exterior lights work but many owners in the past have reported damage to one of the pins in the multiplug that connects the switch.

I’d remove the switch and check the multiplug. If ALL the pins look ok (no browning around the pin or the wires) I’d next suspect the switch itself.

Hmmm - I have just treid Craigs switch in my car as one of my pins appears burnt (pin 14) however still no go, we tried my switch in his car and it worked Ok.

We also discovered that my tail lights don't work - brake lights, rear fogs, reversing lights, headlight, sidelights, indicators all work as do the lamps in the switch and all the other lamps in the car - heater bazels, warning lamps, gearstick surround etc

Are the tail lights and instrument lights split off at some point in the wiring loom from the headlights etc?

Phuturephantasy

I had exactly the same problem and found it to be the female connector (No.14 I think) in the multipin plug to the light switch had got hot and deformed, through heat.
I carefully reshaped it using a small screwdriver and repluged it in, now works fine. Be careful, as apparently you can’t get hold of the female terminals on their own and have to buy the complete loom.
