Title: Smell Post by symo911 on Sep 22nd, 2004, 4:30pm Hi Have just got 2.9 12v had leak from gear box cooler pipe but fixed now. After about 7-8 miles I get burning smell in car, have check oil in box and is red/brown so may be on the way out, but the box still works fine with instant power and smooth changes. If it is the box what should I do and how much to fix..... ??? |

Title: Re: Smell Post by craig on Sep 22nd, 2004, 4:46pm ok,the oil looks ok,have you checked the fluid level correctly, cant really see it being the gearbox though if it all drives fine, think you would probably know if the gearbox WAS on it;s way out.... as for the burning smell,is it occuring all the time ? |

Title: Re: Smell Post by symo911 on Sep 22nd, 2004, 5:36pm When its first used in morning on journey to work dont get smell until about 7 miles then comes and goes. When driving around town, stop/starting on short journeys tends to be more constant. Will check levels when engine is running (is this correct). Thanks |

Title: Re: Smell Post by Berkin on Sep 22nd, 2004, 10:04pm Hi Symo When my exhaust manifold was cracked it was a bit like that. Its very hard to see the leak, under all the ali covers and junk. You need a torch with a very fine beam and low light conditions, so watch out for moving and hot parts. First Garage told me there wasn't one twice, and previously had not spotted that the only fault with the Air con was blocked drain valves. Thats when I went to one owned by friends of friends! Been there ever since. HTH Mike B |

Title: Re: Smell Post by niko111 on Sep 22nd, 2004, 10:09pm have a look at the ol filler cap. it may be weeping out from round it & running down onto the exhaust manifold. just had my 24v doing this. |

Title: Re: Smell Post by Snoopy on Sep 23rd, 2004, 8:43am The rocker covers on the 12v do sometimes leak and it weeps down onto the exhaust manifolds which can cause this smell... They are quite easy to replace but the offside one can be a little more difficult with all the pipes etc.. did both mine last year..... Theres no point in trying to tighten them if they are already tight as they have metal spacers in the bolt inserts to stop overtightening. |

Title: Re: Smell Post by Badboytunes on Sep 23rd, 2004, 10:21pm I had the same problem on my 24v with the cooler pipes. I had them replaced but as they let go when i was doing erm.... 70 mph ( honset guv) i lost an awfull lot of oil. It went everywhere under the bonnet and it stank for ages after that. Tranny oil stinks alot worse than engine oil and I reckon that you may have oil lurking under your car and smelliming when the car gets warm. Have a look underneath with the cover off to see. Cheers Nick ;) |

Title: Re: Smell Post by colinw on Sep 23rd, 2004, 11:48pm this probably is a stupid question but is it oil you can smell and what type of smell is it in my exp, engine oil ,and transmission oil have different smells ,only perhaps i am reading this wrong and missing something ,but how does anyone know what is causing this smell if you dont know what the smell is ,mine had a very intermitant fishy type smell ,before i found part of wiring loom burnt out ,my suggestion would be to drop a very small amount (uople of drops) onto hot exhaust manifold and have a whiff and then do same with transmision fluid , colin |

Title: Re: Smell Post by Snoopy on Sep 25th, 2004, 8:06am Hey Dazza sounds like you have a small weep from the heater matrix or the hoses connecting to it.... big job getting to it .. if it s not too bad would leave alone until it gets really bad or the summer come back... it a dashboard out job to replace it......and they cost about £80...... Title: Re: Smell Post by Eddie on Sep 27th, 2004, 9:04pm Snoopy, where on earth did you pay £80 for a heater matrix?? Probably main dealer? Radiator specialists and any good spares outlet should stock them for about £25. Same as the Sierra matrix. Try local Serck Marston dealers. Doesnt make it any easier to change though! eddie |

Title: Re: Smell Post by Snoopy on Sep 29th, 2004, 8:47am Right, the heater matrix for the Sierra and Ford Scorpio both carry the same Ford part NO which is 85GG 18B539CC the FINIS NOS are however different along with the prices listed by Ford.... there being sever £'s difference I will let you guess which one is MORE expensive! FINIS for the sierra is 1041092 FINIS for the Scorpio 7232897 Hope this helps |
