Title: Yet another gearbox problem!
Post by Chad66 on Sep 27th, 2004, 12:30pm
Hi all,

Any advice on the following auto gearbox problem greatly appreciated.

Firstly, when putting it in D or R, it takes up drive no problem at all.

When setting off it changes from 1st to 2nd fine, but more often than not it will not change up to 3rd until I'm doing about 3000rpm (even under gentle acceleration)..if I'm only doing 30-40mph this often means going along with the engine screaming at these revs with the box still in 2nd.  >:(

If/when it does go into 3rd it will then change up to 4th with no problems...it just seems to be the change from 2nd to 3rd!!

AND just to cap it all...sometimes the box behaves absolutely perfectly...1st, 2nd, 3rd , 4th all when they should be....  :-/

I've checked fluid level (properly)...and can't find any traces of leaks or missing/loose pipes....

Car is 2.9 12v with 53K.....over to you guys..any ideas?

??? ??? ???

Sounds like something it would do if it was in sports mode,  :-/

But, the 12v doesn't have the gearbox with the switchable settings (no buttons).....it just has the '*' marking to show that you should use '2' when driving off on snow...

My 95 2.0 12v has the sports and economy buttons as well as the snow flake!

Check the vacum pipes if they are off the ICV sensor at the front then all sorts of strange things can and do happen to the gear changes on the 12v.

Still not able to fathom what is going on here...

Am I going completely mad, but  I always thought that the 12v had the AL4De box, which was a four speed...

However, as per my original post, when I am travelling along in 'D' in with the engine doing 3000rpm at around 40mph, I am in 2nd gear.

If I then move the gear lever to '3', it drops down a gear!

Is this right?....surely if its in 2 it shouldn't change down a gear?....or am I missing a gear change?

could be a sticky solenoid in the box or your pringl switch is on its way out, is box engaging park when selected, are shift positions lining up with markers is selector lever stiff.also if in second gear at fourty and you change down a gear,
box would be changing to first!very unlikley, would scream your engine

Having had a closer look at the PRINGLE, the orange markers are not quite matching the corresponding settings in the console.

The difference is only a matter of a millimetre, would that matter? Also it makes no difference if I 'waggle' the lever when driving. It engages P and R and first gear in D perfectly.

I quite like the iffy solonoid theory, this ties in with the 'box behaving perfectly 'sometimes'.

Looks like its gonna have to go to a 'box specialist to be sure, but at least I might be able to point them in right direction.

Hi,

You might have an airleak in the hose running down to the box, or the vacuum solenoid is not working smoothly.
(if i remember right that model does not have the full elektronic on the autobox control)
