Title: 2.3 Headgasket
Post by Fitzy on Sep 27th, 2004, 4:27pm
Hi Guys

I recently had to change my inlet manifold and the water pump on my Scorp as the manifold was cracked and water pump bearing had gone, all went smoothly with no probs encounted when doing it, but i had to top the water up after a couple of days, it was only from the min mark to the full mark so not a lot to top up with really but when i took expansion cap off i could smell engine fumes only a light smell not strong as i have smelled it before on other cars i've owned.  I can't find any leaks anywhere else on engine, lower plastic cover is still clean and dry.  So my question is could this smell even though only faint still be a sign that the old girl has blown her headgsket from a cooling channel across one of the pots, she doesn't run any hotter or temp go up when sitting in traffic so there are no other signs.  Would it be advisable to get a pressure test done or would this not show anything up.  There isn't a big build up of pressure there when i remove the expansion cap just the usual few hisses when you undo it then you can remove cap completely.

Have you had to top up again after that inital one??....

If not that was probably down to gettting rid of air pockets left after draining the system, and refilling...

Well worth a pressure check if you are at all suspicious that there might be a leak... But if you are not using/loosing water then I don't really see a problem....

Hi Snoopy

Thanx for the reply, i only topped it up yesterday (monday) for the first time since i finished the work last thursday, will drive it for a few more days and see how she goes, will take it to my local garage who will do a pressure test and a chemical test on the headgasket for £50. Apparently the chemical test can determine if the headgasket has blown even if it is a very minute leak, something to do with the chemical reacting with water, will react with even thevsmallest amount of water.  So will see what they say on thursday.

Cheers
