Title: Misfiring??
Post by Darren on Oct 1st, 2004, 6:35pm
I hope someone can shed some light on a problem I currently have with my 95 2.9 12V Ultima.

A few weeks ago the car cut out, and as I was low on fuel I assumed I had run out of petrol. After refuelling the car it failed to start. However, the following morning the car started up 1st time and ran fine. Later that day I went out and it cut out again and failed to start. The car then started but wanted to cut out and seemed to be misfiring. I towed it to the local garage who plugged it into the computer and diagnosed it as a distributor problem. A new Motorcraft distributor later it now starts up and ticks over lovely but on a run it coughs and splutters over a certain rev range. Everything has been set up as before.

Any suggestions guys??? We are now at a loss as to what it could be.

Thanks
Darren

It's been a long time since I suffered from this problem on an old Avenger. When I ran out of fuel the pickup pipe became clogged with crud from the bottom of the tank. Tickover and revving when stationery was ok but when I tried to rev it when under load it coughed and spluttered as it could not draw enough fuel in.

You may have clogged your fuel filter or pickup pipe so it's worth getting the filter changed and have the feed pipe back blown with compressed air.

Could be something else of course but the above advice can do no harm.

Check your throttle position sensor. Isn't it the same as the 2.9 12v MkIII? My old Scorp used to eat one a year for reasons that were never established - symptoms are exactly as you describe.

I agree with admin. Clogged filter or maybe injector

Thanks for the help guys,

We've pressure tested the fuel pump and all is fine with that. I'll see if they've done any of the suggestions and let you know.

Thanks

A quick update -

I've just come back form the garage who says they are 99% convinced its an electrical problem. They have pressure tested the fuel system at both ends and all is OK.

The computer is saying no faults found though. Any more suggestions on the electrical side????

Thanks
Darren

Well the only thing left to check/replace is the coil... the 12v does have a coil its situated on the nearside inner wing . well worth getting a replacement and trying it may cure the problem.....try the scrap yards for one the old Grannies used thed same system.
