Hello :)

As I am new to my car I thought I would run this one past you all..

Tonight when driving back from a friends I felt a strange vibration, like a buzzing.. I felt the vibration near my left foot. It only happens for a couple of seconds and then goes. It happens randomly although I thought it may have been happening after I have acclerated and eased off the gas. I cant reproduce it so cant be sure.

The car is running fine and there seem to be no issues. Infact it is a dream to drive at the moment and this odd symptom has only happened tonight.

Background info.

One of the small problems I have with the car is a leak from the auto box and I noticed this vibration/ buzzing only after I topped the autobox up. I have to admit that I didnt check the level and just poured what I had left in the bottle down the filler tube as I have been topping it up all weekend - before it goes in to be looked at.

I dont think it has anything to do with that? ??? does it?

If I was sitting in an older car I would say that it sounded and felt like bearings were going on something... Like the bearings in an alternator or a/c compressor.. Even the bearings in the heater fan.. I just seem to be able to reproduce it....

My thoughts are that if it were a serious engine issue it would be doing it more often and I would be noticing other symptoms?

Any ideas guys?

Errm had a look on the main site and - Cattle Grid Effect seems to be a fairly good bet..

Putting more fluid in the box (maybe the incorrect amount) may have upset this seal that is talked about in the ATF pump within the torque convertor..?

Unlike some in the article I cannot get mine to reproduce.. it seems to do it randomly...

hi there

i get a wee vibration at the 50mph mark, just for 1/2 a sec as it locks up. it's been doing this for about 10k miles, after a filter change. ford states 'box oil is for life of car, might be something in that. :-/

Phil,
might be worth checking the exhaust mounting for that, Phil. That's been knwon to work loose at the bottom of the catalyst and I believe the mounting is very near where your left foot would be.

It is funny you should say that m8 because now I think about it because with the buzzing is a slight metallic ringing sound...

All supposition at the moment - I will be getting under it tonight to see what is what.

... could be the heatshield on the cat come loose ??? Mine was rattling and i had to take it off.

I have been under the car and I have re seated the heat sheld and tightened all support brackets.

Also as part of my investigation as to why autobox fluid was on the road I found the two pipes that go to the rad were almost touching the autobox support cross member. Infact a vibration could have easily have made them touch.. Bent them back into place...

Took it for a drive and it hasnt done it since. Going for a cruise later and will report back

Hmmmm! I've a vibration too. Just like what has been described too. It sounds like metal rattling. I can really only hear it with one of the windows open. Sometimes happens at idle (mainly with aircon on) and more especially when accelerating from a full stop. Maybe I have the same problem. Also, there is fluid leaking from somewhere. I think it may be PAS fluid as I have had to top it up a few times over the past few months. Can't see an obvious leak though. When on full lock, there is often a horrible grinding type of noise so I tend to avoid full lock! I put the car at full lock recently and noticed that while I held it in this lock position, the fluid in the PAS reservoir would drop a fair bit. Is this normal? I know you shouldn't hold the wheel at full lock but I was just testing.

Did 50 miles in it last night - all types of driving and it didnt do it once...
