.. Some of you will know that when I picked my Scorpio up it initally struggled to engaged gear in the time acceptable.. This was down to low auto fluid levels in the gearbox. When I arrived home I could see small drops of fluid on the road under the car. I have topped the box up a couple of times over the weekend. Yesterday I filled it to the correct level. It doesnt seem to have leaked since... ???

I also tightened all the bolts that hold the autobox sump pan to the bottom of the box. They all needed tightening.. I need to ask if they are set to some small torque setting and that was infact what they were supposed to be?

The gearbox looks clean and there are no signs of leaks and the box itself is solid and extremly smooth.

14 Nm or 10Ft/lb is the required torque setting for the sump bolts on the auto Box.

Thanks Snoopy.. In laymans terms is that tight? I will go under again with my torque convertor..

In laymans terms thats loose, dont forget you are squashing a gasket and if you over tighten you can distort the sump face resulting in leaks. So be carefull. john.n ;)

one point to note here, is the gasket in question has small pins inserted at bolt positions so mating faces only come up so close.this should stop you overdoing it unlessyour using a 3ft ratchet and youve got arms like popeye lol.

Still leaking - I had a oild pan under the car all night and there is some fluid in it when collected ammounted to about a small teaspoon of oil.

I am going to book it in today..

Anyone recommend a good Auto Box specialist in the Southeast? I use Mister Transmission of Charlton but it is a pig to get to..

Phil, if the sump on the box is clean where are you loosing the fluid from??.... Have you checked the oil cooler pipes under the front of the rad its the most favourite place to loose fluid from.. I know!....if its only the sump gasket that need replacing its a job any competant DIY'er can do if you can get the car high enough off the ground.

Looks like I am going to have to get it up again.. It looked so clean underneath when i looked and i was right under it..

I have booked it in to a transmission specialist next thursday.. But before that i will check what you have said. The pipes we are talking about - are there two of them?

If they are they were the ones that i thought looked out of shape i.e they were bent towards the back of the car..

Jack the b****r up again then.. May have to purchase a bigger jack! hehe

why is the word s.p.o.o.n replaced with the word thingy? heheh

I use teaspoons to stir my tea .. hehe

Hi Phil I go along with snoopy here and recommend you investigate oil cooler pipes they are prone to rust and symptons fit and the good news is they are comparitivly cheap to replace, cost of pipes (Two) are approx 50 pounds for both and about 80 to fit but if you fit them yourself and it is not such difficult job then further money can be saved I would also suggest that before fitting you treat the new pipes with anti rusting treatment there are some real good products on the market today, anyway best of luck and keep us informed as to what happens.

Phil,
Have you seen where the fluid is dripping from? There are several usual suspects:

1 Worn gear on pinion drive for the VSS which then leaks.
2. Loose dipstick tube
3 Damaged autobox sump springing the gasket
4 Rear fluid seal - if stood for too long the rear fluid seal at the prop shaft becomes oval and permits a leak.
5 Worn ATF pump fluid seal
6. Failing torque converter.

However, there are no driveability issues so it shouldn't be too serious - fingers crossed. ;)

I bought a decent 3 tonne trolly jack yesterday and I had the car up at a decent height so I could have a good look around..

I cant see anything obvious.. I had the engine protecting cover off and tracked the oil pipes and there was not anything wrong..

I have a feeling that it is the sump gasket. It is the only thing that seems to be covered in oil..

Now I think it's over to the experts.

If you have that feeling then replacement is the only course of action..... It is not a difficult DIY job but you do need some space to work in as the car needs to be failry high off the ground.(Either on Ramps or Stands- NOT A JACK). If you intend to DIY then replace the filter and of course the ATF fluid that you drain off has to be relaced with NEW... I personally use Dexron 3 but I understand that dexron 4 is available and fits the spec well and as you cannot drain off the torque converter you will only need about half the amount. so about 4ltr will be required. Full details on the site.

I wish you well in the task and hope the new gasket cures the problem

Hi Phil,

If you take it to an Auto specialist they should be able to drain all the fluid out even from the torque convertor because the suck the fluid out with a special machine, ihave had this done in the past with no problems. They can even do the filter too, when i had it done about 3 years ago in Ilford, Essex, it cost me about approx £40 including new fluid, gasket and filter, only took about 30 mins to do the whole job. You should be able to find an Auto specialist in the Yellow pages or Thomson local.

I have booked it into JT Transmissions in Erith tomorrow..

BTW - I did have it on stands and it was chocked and my reserve 2 tonne jack was in place too.. The3 tonne one have me that extra room that I needed.. my garage and pit are long gone so am only able to look at it on the road.

All fixed.

Loose cooling pipe - I suppose that is why you have these people as they spotted it straight away with the car 6ft up in the air and a xenon inspection lamp.. Me with a jack and a torch is a feeble alternative..

They didnt charge me. The guy who runs it is a top bloke and I would recommend them to anyone in SE London.

Commented on the car being a superb example... nice and tight and very clean..

I am now a happy bunny :D

Phil,

Glad you've got these initial niggles sorted (& always a nice surprise to find a decent garage!).

Not trying to be pessimistic but just reading the title of this thread reminds me of the words of Winston Churchill:
