Title: pulsing fan
Post by stevelufc on Oct 7th, 2004, 7:57pm
Hi, I've a 96 2.9 ultima, when using the climate control not in auto the fan starts to pulse as it reaches the required temp. Is it normal.
Thanks steve.

I don't want to worry you mate but mine used to do that, getting worse slowly and now it doesn't work at all. Still, lets be optimistic. Mines a total heap so it's probably just a symptom of rapid decline. Yous must be in much better nick so it's probably normal.

I shall still be interested to hear what the experienced chaps have to say.

Steve,

I hate to break the news mate but it sounds like the HBC (Heater Blower Control) unit is on its way out :(.

see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/hbctest.htm for a description.

Apparently, some HBC suffered from heat overload. The module has a heat sink which disperses the heat. Some say earlier models didn't have big enough heat sinks to shed the heat quickly enough causing the module to shut down until cool and re-activate.

My father's Scorpio suffered the exact same problem with the fans pulsing on and off. we replaced the HBC and the problem cured instantly.

Steve,

Dont take a chain saw to it yet mate.

Have a look at these links i've put up.

http://www.anyboard.net/autos/cars/scorpio/posts/295.html

http://www.anyboard.net/autos/cars/scorpio/posts/296.html

The HBC is the module in the middle of the picture with three multiplugs on it. To remove simply unplug the three connectors and undo the two screws. Module just lifts out at an angle.

I had the same problem too, on my Ultima, got a new HBC module from Ford, £95 :o, although they have changed the design to aid cooling (thank god, don't want to buy too many at that price ::))

Mine does this too.  :'(

I find that if I wack the blower on to full, then the blower starts working again. I then return it to it's original position and it works for a while.

I've put up with it so far, but it's now rather annoying and am only just getting round to trying to fix the problem.

I had to get higher prority things done first like global closing mod etc etc.  ::)

Cheers,
Wayne

I have the exact same problem.
Whitout climate-control then.
Whichever side I turn the knob, fresh air or resirculated, the fan pulsates.. on stage 1, it workes most of the time. But now as the fall is closing I sometimes need some extra  ;)
Turning the knob over to stage 3, usually gives me a burst of fresh air for aprox 5-15 seconds. Then it reduces speed to stage 1 automaticly.. >:(
I give up and start driving, then whenever I'm i a roundabout, or making any other sharp turns the fan starts blowing like a hurricane again.. and stops the second the car straighten up again..  ???
Do I need to replace the speed regulator for the fan, or the fan itself?
Any reply is apreciated.

Thanks Danny, looks very straight forward even for a carpenter. Any way back to b&q to return the chainsaw. Thanks again,
steve. 8)

I have the same behaviour - a pulsing fan when it's not in the fan auto setting - but I'm not sure if it could be the HBC causing the problem for me.

The way I read this thread the HBC is cutting out when it gets hot, but a second problem I have is no heat coming out. So is it likely I need a new HBC?

Cheers

Richard

Mine did do this.

I ran the reset checks and turned the ignition off halfway through.. The CC is now confused but works fine!
