Title: 2.5 TD Turbo Question
Post by Sierragls on Oct 14th, 2004, 8:32am
Hi
I have Just bought a 2.5TD Granny 94L which i have been told has the same engine as the scorpio.
I am just wondering weather you should be able to feel a noticeable kick when the turbo kicks in. The car accelerates ok but you cant really feel the turbo kick in?
Can anyone help?

Hello!

As far as I know diesels you won't feel any noticeable kick like in Impreza WRX cos diesel, especially a turbo one, delievers considerable torque from very low revs and its torque graph doesn't show any huge leaps in torque like that of the petrol engine!

But the turbine pressure is still worth checking!

Best regards,
OHC

How do you go about checking the turbine pressure?

I heard people who repair turbos or tune Subaru do know some simple way to measure it! But first of all you shouldn't have even the slightest trace of oil in air inlet hose or air filter box! No blue fume from the exhaust, only a bit of the black one than you press the right pedal sharply!

Best regards,
OHC

I have a tdi-it's got a good engine as far as I know-there is no 'kick' as such, but as you accelerate with your foot to the floor you realise the acceleration becomes much stronger as the speed/revs increase-that's the turbo system pushing in extra air/juice to the engine. You can feel it as it pushes you back in your seat but it's gradual, not sudden. (defo not a turbo 'kick' as in other 'sports type' cars I have owned such as supra turbo and the like)  ::)

Hi 2.5 TD folk
I ve had my 2.5 ghia est for about 2 months now and more than  happy with it. :D as an oil burner. Been along the M8, keeping up with traffic flow, just the odd merc&bmw drivers to let pass. But  a 2.9 coss will eat them up one day ;D. 95 max will do me fine,if I need to.That 3rd gear is great in town

Hi
If the turbo is working ok you should get a noticeable surge of power at approx 1800 RPM, which should continue until you reach max revs (you would have to be a sadist to go that far!). You will find that this powerband starts further up the RPM range as the turbo wears.
My old one (L464, sold 2 months ago) got as high as 2400 RPM before attaining max power, great car though, better than the 98 Ultima Estate that I changed it for! :-/
