I would imagine that someone has fitted a second hand speedo transducer in the gearbox ...and its the wrong one .. there are several and the cost may have been prohibitive therefore encouraging a previous owner to get whatever was available at the time ... cure ?? well .. the right one ......regards .....STN

Hi mate,

STN is right. The VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensor is a little device which sits at the very end of the gearbox. It has three wires going into a multiplug which send signals to the cars computer, instrument cluster etc.. of the vehicles speed.

Go down to your local Ford dealer and have them look up a vehicle speed sensor for the AUTO box. They have been the same design since the sierra and granada so you should'nt have any problems getting one. Mine cost me £58 from Ford.

How much less does it read?
My car does it also (about 6 km/h) but if I go to the diagnostic mode, hold the trip reset button, the digital one reads correctly, I think its suppose to do that.

:) cheers guys , had a new vss fitted and speedo is spot on now . also smoother gear changes , gearbox behaving really well now. bought part from fords £60, and local garage fitted it for £25. the old sensor was almost impossible to turn when he took it off .
