I don't really like the accelerator response on my 1997 Cossie, but is it just be me?

I find that the first quarter of the pedal travel doesn't do an awful lot, and I need to put my foot down further in order to get the g/box to drop down a gear and get some acceleration going.

The problem is that only a relatively small extra travel then causes the box to drop down further and the car shoots off like a rocket - which I didn't want. The two g/box changes simply seem too close together.

Ideally, I would like the first downshift to occur earlier - so requiring less pedal travel to get a move on, and so giving a longer travel before the next downshift.

Is this possible?

The timing gear has been replaced and the engine is running really beautifully. Also, a computer diagnostic check shows all systems operating correctly.

How do others find their 24v pedal responses.

Hi Roger this may sound fairly basic but have you checked gear box fluid level is at correct level?.

I kind of agree with you that it sometimes changes down when you don't want it to and sends you off rocket-like.
This seems to happen when I'm in 'E' and try to give it some. In this case its best to use the O/D button. I use this a lot to give an instant 'downshift'. Then the throttle does the next bit.
But there is always 'S' mode of course. That alters the characteristics again and will give totally different gear change times. If you're needing it to "get a move on" you need to use this more.
I think its just a case of getting the box in the right mode for a certain situation. Takes a bit of practice.

Shows how versatile a car this can be.

Roger,
You need to check 2 separate items to ensure that the pedal travel is correctly related to throttle movement.
1. Have an assistant depress the accelerator pedal slowly while you watch the throttle quadrant. Is the full movement of the pedal the same as the throttle spindle? If not adjust the cable.
2. Using OBD select just the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) in the standard OBD data and watch the reading as you depress the throttle. It should start about 15-17% with the pedal at rest, up to 100% with the pedal on the metal. If you don't get these reading the TPS may be faulty or out of phase with the throttle plate.

I'm 18 months into ownership of mine now and yet, at that moment you describe, the grin still appears ;D ;D ;D
I'm still enjoying it. I love this car.
Do you think I'll ever lose the feeling? :-/

Thanks to all who have responded so far.

Kenboy - g/box fluid. Car has recently had a full service and I have checked the level since. Thanks for the suggestion.

Paul_B - I am relatively new to the car, and I did find that using the Sports mode helped. I normally keep it in Economy, so tend to use Sports mode only if I think I've got some serious overtaking to do.

Eric_R - I will check the relationship between throttle quadrant and spindle ASAP. Won't be before the weekend as it's dark when I get home.

PS.

Eric_R, I will note the revs at which things occur with the g/box and engine performance. Perhaps I'm experiencing the the down turn of the power curve at just after 3000 rpm.
