Title: Rev's die when drive selected
Post by flash on Oct 27th, 2004, 1:59pm
I've had my 96 2.9 12v Ultima  Auto for a few months and after a few weeks I had a problem with with the rev's dying when drive selected, stalling the engine. This was cured with a service and new plugs but has suddenly returned with the onset of damp weather. By coincidence, my CD has suddenly ceased to work showing "CHECK DISC". Could this be a bad earth wire somewhere?  The aircon has worked intermitantly so I have removed it for now but would like to repair it for the summer. Has anyone had similar problems and can offer advice? It's done 91K so are these problems that occur with age? Please help if you can.
Andy.

Not sure if you have any luck in resolving this, but we also have 2.9 12v which has taken to fading out when setting off. It is very difficult to restart (similar to flooding?). This one belongs to my parents and my 12v is also very sensitive to a cold start set off and requires gentle application of the accelerator to get away. The usual trick of a service (Plugs mainly - but set 5-10 thou tighter than the service book recomends) now hasn't resolved the problem. The local main dealer has now fitted an idle valve to no avail.

Are we the only ones with this problem?

Look to the ICV  for the problems you describe...  Cleaning around the inside with carb cleaner can help  but it is possible to take the ICV apart and clean with switch cleaner....

Hi,

You can also try new HT leads. (from distributor to sparkplugs)

Hi,

One of the guys at the last Herts meet had similar idleing problems with a 12v. We sprayed the linkages and throttle sensor with WD/40 and he has been back in contact to say all is running well again. Could be a d**n cheap fix.

Best of luck
