Title: Wiper mechanism
Post by Big_Bear on Nov 5th, 2004, 8:36am
Mornin',

I've tried searchin' for 'wiper mechanism removal' but the systems says it can't find a match.  Can anyone guide me to any instructions regarding the removal, servicing or replacement of the wiper mechanism.  Is there any special way to ask for a search on the forum, as I don't seem to have much success, hence this question now?

I can't wait to stop that silly 'popping' off of the short arm!!!  And of course, it only happens when I most need the wipers doesn't it?  It's also most degrading to be seen at the side of the road, with me new Scorp', with the bonnet up!  And of course, you know that everyone of your friends and neighbours will be passing you at that time...........GGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRR!

It's realy quite easy. The hardest part is removing the black plastic 'grill' between the screen and bonnet as the plastic clips either side are quite fragile. (after taking the wiper arms off of course).

Once you've done that, on the drivers side, you'll see the motor. Unplug the motor and undo the three big bolts around it. The whole assembly should lift out together.

Incidently, worth noting that the wiper mechanism is the same as all Mk3 Granadas from 1985 should you require a replacement.

Cor blimey, thanks for the info.

I did look at those clips and think,  mmmmmmmmmmm after all those years in the weather, will they be the ones I have to remove without breaking them??

But whatever the hassle, It'll be so nice ;D ;D to have wipers again!!!!!!..............

Noted about the same mech' as the older model, thanks muchly for your time old chap

Kindest regards, Barry..........BBBBBBBBBB

Picture here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/acmod.htm

as it has to be removed to fit the aircon mod!

As Simon said, quite easy but I did have to buy new clips!

My wiper arm also dropped off on the M6 in a cloudburst-not very funny. It then refused to stay on for more than 100 wipes so I experimented with a rubrer band around the two arms. It was a bit of a bodge but it worked for a month until the rubber band perished. I replaced it with a piece of 3mm diameter rubber tied in a loop. This has lasted 6 months with no problems. For security I added a duplicate after 3 months. It sounds dodgy but in practice I can see no draw backs.

With 95k on a 2.3 Ultima I am reluctant to replace systems unnecessarily

Dont bother replacing the arm!!

2x cable ties in a cross over pattern will hold the joint together for ever!

Mine has been like it for 5 years. Ionly replaced them once and that was because I wanted to slap a bit of grease on the ball joint.

I will take a piccy tommorrow and post it.

Hello Eddie!

Please, take a pics of your clever mod as soon as possible, cause wiper mechanism is always a problem!
I also want to suggest a solution: remove the mechanism, drill through the ball joint and the cap and insert a thin but long bolt with washers and two nuts! Don't forget to add some grease!

As temporary measure You can also turn the arm over, cause another cap is usually not so weared!

Best regs,
OHC
