anyone help explain a new noise from rear of my 2.3L 16 v ultima estate , is intermittent ,  sounds like clonking (metal to metal) with limited access i checked the prop . shaft....in gear no play...... in neutral i can turn the shaft about 15 deg. the half shafts seem ok .....is the  prop. shaft movement too much i.e.is diff'l g/box us or is the problem likely to be elsewhere....!?  e.g.catalyst:(

Sounds like the Universal Join problem .. solved by repacking with grease and/or jacking the back of the car up and dropping it (the later process I got from a FMD when my Mk3 developed a clonk from the rear!)

Don't know alot more except I had a mk3 making similar noises .. thinking it terminal and beyond what I wanted to tackle I took it to my local FMD who at the time had a knowledgable service manager who liked the Scorpio's.

They charged to 'repack the grease' in the drive shaft universal joints but at the time said that the noise was usually cured as a result of the rear being jacked up and then dropped again. I presume this allows the joints to realign.  

Of course a 'clunk' can come from many other areas so it's worth getting a few opinions as to what is actually wrong but exercise care as most dealers are now no more that parts fitting operations driven by the diagnostic trees Ford publish.

Involves (jacking up and supporting), Release large end of rubber covers each end of each drive shaft (4 covers). Peel back and repack joints with black uvj grease.
Clips removed beforehand can be replaced with extra large cable ties.

The clunk you speak of could possibly be due to wear in the diff though.

When rotating prop shaft through its slack phase do the drive shafts rotate or not? No rotation of drive shfts means slack diff.

It depends whether it’s a clonk or a clack.    I had clonking CV on my last two Grannies and thought the noise on my Scorpio was the same.    But with hindsight it was more of a clack like the noise made by those suspended balls sold as executive toys.    I had the CVs greased and the noise did not come back so I thought it was fixed.    Then a rear wheel bearing went in most unpleasant way.    And after 10,000 miles the diff bearing on the same side also went!    For some reason (cost reduction?) they fitted rear wheel bearings with plastic cages on the Scorpio.   If, or rather when, the cages disintegrate after running in hot grease for many hours, the bearing becomes a "Sprague" clutch as one roller rides up on its neighbour.    If you have not replaced the original rear wheel bearings I would do so.
