Title: Fault on temp gauge??
Post by Geoff_W on Nov 7th, 2004, 12:01pm
Morning folks, interesting thing just happened.

Been doing top ups and checks and took car for a short drive.

After about five miles I saw my temp needle move up to max from centre. Happened steadily took 2 seconds.

Stopped to check under the bonnet. Nothing unusual, water levels fine, no steam or hisses no obvious hot hoses.

Left car for about ten minutes started up and the needle went straight to max again.

Turned heaters to full opened the windows and drove home, half way back as I was going round a bend, needle dropped back to normal. Fine since.

Obviously could be temp transmitter, wiring or gauge, any ideas on checks that I can make and were are the
transmitters to be found on the 2 litre 16valve.

Thoughts much appreciated.

Geoff

I have same problem for a long time. Has not caused any major problem. Just today was checking some things and found the wires going to the sensor were bare--- insulation had cracked and one wire broken. Did a tape job on them but have not tried out yet. The wires were running alongside the side of the engine and obviousy got too hot. Had similar problem with wires going to plugs. Seems to be common and there is a lot of info on this problem on this site. Site is excellent -- thanks to all who help --- keep it up and happy motoring, :D

Thanks Tom,

I put this problem up on the list as well and Chris Baxter passed on info about the temp sensor, but I know that on a 95 I should also be checking the cable.

You are also right about the site amazing amount of good info and ideas and some very knowledgeable members. I hope that you continue to find it helpful.

Hope your insulating the cable sorts yours, if so could you let us know?

Geoff
