Title: Headlight electrical problem....
Post by psychosime999 on Nov 12th, 2004, 12:13am
My Scorpio 2.5td has only one bug-eye at night, due to an electrical problem somewhere! I've fitted a new bulb (tested) and it still don't work. All the fuses are OK. Anyone got any tips on this for me please? I've seen a few scorpios with same side (near side) out at night - and police don't seem to stop me for it even! I think it's a common problem. Any help please?

I had the same problem everything seemed OK but no light, it turned out to be a bad earth at the headlamp.

Auto electrician hooked up a new earth cable to the headlamp and all shone bright again.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply,
The main beam and sidelight work OK on that side, just not the dipper beam. I did try another earth but this didn't fix the problem I'm afraid. I thought about running a wire from the side that's working (for the live on dipped beam bulb) but you can't do this because of the dim dip feature...
What I thought about doing was using another relay and wiring it to the switch myself but this seems a bit radical! I'd wire it so that when the sidelights only are on, the bulb is connected to the normal circuit. When dipped beam is on, it'd be connected to live via the other pole of this relay.. problem is, it'd be on when the dipped beem was on even with the ignition off - i think!
Still stuck here, but thanks...

have you tried the underside of the (drivers side) fuse box??

Give the connectors a good going over, try to reseat them, have someone watch the headlights while you do it.

before you try anything radical have you actually gone back to basics and checked for voltage at the bulb  connector ?? ,i know some of the earlier fords particulary escorts used to have problems with the connector ,esp if uprated bulbs were used ,and this is a relativley easy fix about a fiver ,as eddie suggested also check the connectors under the fuse box and whilst you are checking them give em a quick blast with some contact cleaner ,for what its worth  i personally think you will be asking for truoble if you start adding extra wiring and relays ,for what is basically a simple problem ,it may just take time finding it ,and i know this probably sounds really stupid but i have had bulds that check out ok on a meter ,dont actually work when voltage is applied ,our small 12v halogen ones in the office being a prime example
