Title: 24v cosworth problems and poor responses
Post by RogerTheRacer on Nov 17th, 2004, 9:36pm
Firstly I have a few problems with a late 1994 24v cosworth estate that I purchased 2 weeks ago:

The Heater does nothing but Blow Cold air, I've reset it but no avail.

The pasenger electric window works once out of 20 attempts. Motor on it's way out maybe ?

The steering wheel shudders when turning at low rpm almost tickover revs. eg. when tuning out of a T junction

The car had a new alternator fitted by the garage I purchased it from as the battery light was lit on the dash. Now the battery is breathing heavy with acidic fumes out of a side port. It would seem the alternator is over charging the battery maybe ?

I'm getting a "thump" from the auto box when I'm slowing down to about 10 mph, I guess its the chamge from 2nd to 1st gear ?

Last Sunday the entire dash display died as I was driving along, the car still ran fine but I had no tacho, speedo, temp, fuel or odometer + trip readings at all.

It did come back once I stopped, switched it off and on again, only to go off again ?

Also the ABS and Traction Control light were illuminated on the dash

Any ideas ?

I also have a hole in the rear cross member which the garage said was a drain hole ? This info came from a Ford Dealership in Bradford who checked the car over and also fixed the heater, which does not work !

And this hole is corrosion 100 %

Secondly having belonged to a Porsche 928 forum with my weekend car, I am impressed with the content and features of the forum and site but disapointed with the response from the Scorpio lovers / owners. I posted last week a question on exchanging the rear suspension from load levellers to conventional shocks / springs. And I had over 40+ hits but no replies !!!

Also my heater question only had 1 reply to reset it.

Are there not any technical guys out there or is it just not that kind of car ?? With all due respect

Regards
Roger

hi there

i answered your question in part when you posted it! :(
most of us try to keep the car 'standard', hence a lack of replies. did you post back after checking the pump?
anyway, your problems....
have you tried the passenger window switch? might be some carbon build-up on the main switch.
lose connection to the dash? http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fasciabulbs.htm
abs light is covered at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/brakerepairs.htm
re heater. try back flushing the system by taking off bottom hose and running water though header tank until clear.
re battery. what volts is in the battery when running? it should be about 14.2v.
re gear change. have you cleaned the MAF? or check level/ condition of fluid? http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm

that should give you something to start with.
let us know how you get on.

Hi Roger. Another reply for you!  ;)

Firstly, the instruments packing up and then coming back is a symptom of a fault in the charging circuit. If the battery is boiling then yes, it's overcharging. Most likely culprit is the regulator in the alternator. I would get the voltage checked asap as the sensitive electronics in these cars don't like high or low voltages.

Window. Is it the same useing either switch? If so then the motor may be parialy siezed. Common through lack of use. Shouldn't need replacing though, just removal and cleaning.

The steering sounds like the belt is slipping. As you've had the alternator removed i'd check that it hasn't been damaged or maybe just too worn to grip the P/S pully properly. Also check PS fluid and for signs of any leaks.

Heater. It is very common in the earlier Granada Scorpio Cosworth for the heater to get gunked up. Is the coolant clean or a muddy brown colour? Giving it a good flush through with a garden hose usualy solves this. I'm not 100% sure where the hoses run on the later BOB engine but on the earlier BOA you'll find a hose comming out of the driver's side of the bulkhead at the rear of the cylinder head.

Auto thump. Yes, going into 1st but shouldn't be that noticable, hows the fluid, red or brown? Not neccessarily the box though, could be a worn propshaft UJ or maybe some slack in the diff'.

The instrument failure seems to indicate a loose plug... Well worth twisting yourself inside out and making sure the plugs are pushed well home on all the fuse boxes and eec unit..... The battery overcharging seems to indicate to me a doide failure and are you sure they fitted a new alternator?  Over charging is usually causde by a diode failure and it lets the full ammperage through only ever seen it twice... IF it is that, then the alternator should be covered under warranty..

The voltage check can be found on this page http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm

One or two questions .. Is there a battery cover fitted if not then your electrical gremlins could be down to water in the electrics.

With regards the 'thump' have you done a maf  clean ?

If not worth doing http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm  has been know to cure all!

Check the level on the auto box...Thats done when HOT and with engine running on level ground and after cyling the gears two or three times.. ATF should be red in colour and have very little odour to it.. if its  brown and smells like dirty oil then it needs changing...Not really a DIY job.

If the heater was 'FIXED' by the garage why not take it back there and get them to 'fix' it or was it a freebie...

Re window try substituting window switch ..if the wiring layout is the same as the old granada then power to passenger side switch comes from drivers doorswitch.

Roger,

A lot of your issues are covered on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/index2.htm mostly based on contributions from individuals and their experiences.

If people do not answer it may be because they are interested but do not have a view. Probably better to get quality rather than just quantity if you have a technical problem.

It may also be worth your while considering subscribing to the mailing list for your more tecnical or hypothetical questions.

However as a mailing list you will also get a lot of other peoples technical problems aired and through your mailbox.

Having said all this, your current post appears to be drawing down some appropriate and considered feedback.

Finally based on some of your themes, as Snoopy says, do you have a battery cover? If not you probably also have water in the fuse box.

Geoff
