Title: heater matrix cold water on return pipe
Post by g.wass on Nov 18th, 2004, 5:57pm
95 2.9 12v Ultima.  Heater is luke warm air. Have flushed heater Matrix. Fitted new stat and still warm air. The pipe going into the heater is red hot the return pipe is cold to luke warm. Tried bleeding the system but still the same. Is this a Ultima problem. My 1990 Scorpio I could get it tropical inside and never had problems with it. Is there something I am missing bleeding the system. This is not a reset problem as there is no valve in the hot water circuit , or is there

It would seem the matrix is seriously clogged up.

Try disconnecting the feed pipes (at the engine end ,much easier!) and REVERSE flushing. Thats passenger side of car to drivers side.

Failing that, drain the matrix, block the inlet pipe and pour some rad cleaner into other end followed by hot water, and leave over night etc.

Is there a curry sort of smell in the car ?? If so then the matrix is leaking.

Other than this then its a new matrix, about £25 from a motor factor-same as a sierra/granada matrix. A pig to change unfortunately. See article on this site.

If you remove pipes from matrix(drivers side engine bulk head) do not wiggle pipes as the fittings are plastic and easily broken.

Hi  thanks for advice but if matrix is leaking would I not see a drop in coolant also would it leak into car. I did notice a curry smell when I first bought the car about 5 months back but put it down to the ethnic origin of the Guy I bought it off

If it is just weeping a little and thats all it takes to get that smell you might not even see the offending minute amount of coolant..It evaporates on the HOT surface of the pipe and therefore nevers gets around to drip size.... Once smelt it is a smell you never forget...
