Title: 2 Fuel gauges...Why?
Post by Adrian on Nov 20th, 2004, 9:33pm
Hi, I've just bought a 1995 M-reg 2.9 24V. cosworth. On the instument display panel, there is a fuel gauge with a picture of a pump, and there is also an electronic display, which tells me how many miles till refuelling. Firstly I would like to know is why are there two fuel gauges. Secondly, my gauge with the pump symbol doesn't work, is it meant to ?(bearing in mind, that the other one works just fine). Anybody have any ideas ?

.....and I will just say that the fuel guage has to be really quite low before the pump symbol lights up.
Well, it does on mine anyway.

Three if you include the data available by pressing and holding the speedo reset button for ten seconds and cycling through the reports.

Have a look at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm

My fuel warning light typically lights when 50 miles left indicated on drive computer then audible bleeps in units of ten miles. The last 2 miles seem to go on forever, thank goodness.  :)

mine also needs to be very low it comes on when it says i have less than 50miles left ,so about 4gallons then !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! just joking in reality its probably 3 gallons ,but i dont really see how you can call it a gauge its just a low fuel light in association with the guage for people who never look at instruments ,I thought most cars had these things fitted now and have done for a few years

On my cars 1996 and newer. it beeps at 50 miles then 25 miles and then 10 miles. but be warned, at 10 miles it drops to zero in about 1 to 2 miles.
but i can't say how much petrol still in the tank at zero, I was going along with my fingers crossed hopeing to get to the next petrol station, which I did.
So travelling on zero suggest you still got petrol in the tank, but i am never going to put it to the test.
Best fill up at least when it gets to 25 miles.
I understand running out of petrol can cause damage to the cat. converter, but there are people on this site that will know better than me.

Running out of petrol certainly damages the cat....that's if you kick it when you get home!

I saw that Top Gear - very interesting and slightly annoying (pretty sure my Scorp wouldn't go London to Edinburgh (or was it Glasgow?) on one tank of gas).

I saw that top gear too , again that irresponsible idiot Clarkeson was running on the motor way ,in awful weather conditions , without lights or screen on demist to save fuel.Don't see how not having the heater on would save much fuel if any. Any way  setting a fine example of responsible driving as per usual.
