Title: Very odd transmission problem...
Post by Phil_Waller on Nov 21st, 2004, 9:23pm
Hi All,

Not sure how to best describe this...

Yesterday I got in the car and started it up. I always give it about 10 secs before engaging gear. I almost always have to engage reverse as it is parked on my drive.

I selected reverse and instantly notice a 'snatching' sensation and the whole car vibrating and juddering..

Obviously concerned I stuck it in neutral and let the revs return to normal.. Again I put in reverse and the same symptoms were experienced. I put my foot on the accelerator and it was if the car was running on one cylinder.. Not power and a very strong vibration..

I finally switched the ignition off and left it for 10 seconds. Restarted it and put in in reverse and it engaged correctly and I could move the car..

Has anyone else experienced this??

The car has been fine all weekend..

hi phil

could be trying to catch 2 gears at once? have you checked level etc? you had a small leak, didn't you? is it/was it wet/damp where you live? check the usual suspects.
or plug in the obd2 and see if anything turns up.

hth

Hi Phil. I had this exact same problem about 8/9 months ago. Strangely, it came on after the front end had been up on stands for a bit. Once back on the ground, I gave it some back and forth manouvering (to get the suspension to settle) and it was awful in reverse, just as you describe.
Anyway, it ended up being the fluid being a bit low. So as Andrew suggests, I'd look there first.

I have manual gear and have had the same.

I always have to rev out of the garage, if i dont give it some rpm before starting to back out, everything shakes like hell, this dont stop befor i stamp the ?chlutch? inn again and give it some rpm..
Then its all fine again.............
Newer hapens when hot.....

Your problem sounds like a cold start problem, rather then a gearbox prob.

Or somthing from the gearbox and backwards...

Sorry but i forgot, it has happened when hot to, in 1.gear, waithing for the car in front to start from a traficlight, sneeaking forworth withour giving rpm, its started shaking just the same, just shaking no moving...

I expirienced this a couple of times. Feels as though the fuel management is confused. Turning off and restarting cures it. Could the accelerator being operated as you get in, before starting, cause this? :-/
