Oh Dear. The auto box on my 2.9 Ultima has started to make a 'knocking / rumbling' noise in normal driving. It happens in all gears but is worst when reversing, especialy uphill. As this is supposed to be a recon' box would you agree with my guess that the torque converter needs looking at? Also, if so, is it common practice that you get the t/converter done at the same time as a recon box or will some companies just reuse your old one? The fluid is brown and does smell burnt, not good.

I've drained some fluid out and put a proffesional transmission additive in to see if it would help but no difference.

some do ... some don't simon ..what they will do though is to refuse any warranty without the converter being replaced ..don't get too despondent before checking the propshaft doughnut and u/j's first though .. regards ...STN

I've checked the prop and all is sound. Anyway, when the car is warm, the noise is apparent when stationary so must be 'box related and as I said, the fluid is very burnt. I'm wondering whether the garage has changed the box at all or whether we've been ripped off.

What sort of milage have you done on the 'supposed recon box' and was it ok to start with????..

My first thought are that you have been ripped off.. but it does need further proffesional investigation.... If it is a recon box it should have some warranty on it .. at least three months if not a year if a good reputable company....

Garages ripping people off ? Surely not.

I know i t sounds daft but if your car is go in to have major, or not so major , bits replaced , always insist (before you even discuss price ) that you will insist on seeing the old bits that have been removed ( they are your property ), If the garage hums and haws about this arrangement , go elsewhere. Also , take a visual note of components , spark plugs, filters, put Tipex on bolts that are likely to be removed Etc.

Yes, agree with you. The box was put into this one from my mate's write-off before I got it, about a month ago. The box itself has only done about 400mls since being done so I think my mate has been ripped off. The car was collected from his house and then delivered back to him. He had never even seen the garage! Personaly, yes, I would have expected to have seen the old car minus 'box and the old one as well. Well I took the car back to the garage to get the new exhaust fitted I asked to see the old car but was told it had already been scraped.

I'm going to take the car to the original auto transmission specialist that did the original recon and see if they think this is the box they worked on. Would an auto box have a serial number?

GOOD NEWS! (Fingers crossed)

Took it to the auto specialist today and they don't believe it's the 'box at all. What they think is that the monkeys who did the transplant in the first place, have not put it all back together quite right and the noises are actualy the box touching something it shouldn't transmitting the noise thru the cabin. Most likely candidate is the rear mount has not been done properly. As the previous garage could not even put a brand new exhaust and cat on straight, it's now blowing from the joint, this sounds very likely. She's going in Thurs AM to have it rectified.

Yes, g/box mount and exhaust not refitted properly so 'grinding / knocking' noises were being transmitted through the cabin.
