Title: red line
Post by ferretmobile on Nov 22nd, 2004, 10:02am
Over the weekend, pulling away from a set of lights and showing a little sporty job my dust so to speak...I pushed the 2.3 right up to the red line in first gear and as the revs reached maximum there seemed to be a cutout on the engine. Changed gear to second and the engine picked up again without any further problems.
So the question is, is ther a cut out system on the 2.3 manual and does taking the revs right up to the redline do any harm to this willing and powerful unit?
I read that you guys who have the 2.9 autos push foot to floor and the auto unit takes the power right up to max in all gears.  Is the system any diffirent in the stick change options?  ???

Hi Ferret,  :)
Ah yes, thats what they call a rev limiter :o. Ignition system cuts the spark to the engine to stop you revving it any further >:(. I would not recommend you do this too often as if nothing else, it will certainly cause premature wear to your engine.

The auto will automatically change gear before the rev limiter is reached so people with autos can just keep it nailed to the floor! 8)

Hi Waders,
do you know if all the manual Scorps have rev limiters?

Thanks,
Kev.

Kev ;D,
Yep, prety much everything with an electronic ignition has a rev limiter :o. This generaly works by cutting off low tension power to one (4 cylinder) or more (eg V6) of the coils when a preset RPM is reached :-/.
I'm sure my old manual 's limiter kicked in at 6350 RPM ::)

Thanks Waders,
I can feel re-assured so that the car will try to stop me blowing it up!
Good thing and all seen as how Ford decided to stop making these fantastic cars, and I guess we all want them to last for many years yet.

KKev.

hi there

you might find that hitting the red line will have left an error code in the ecu.

not a good idea taking it to the max. power is droping off anyway. more like 5750rpm, then a quick change up. :)
