Title: How do I remove a drive shaft?
Post by sobjoy on Nov 29th, 2004, 4:49pm
I can see how to access the wheel bearings at the rear of my M-reg Scorpio diesel, but how far do I need to go to get a broken drive shaft out? Do I need to remove the suspension arm? (I am talking right side, if that makes any diff). Any info greatly appreciated.

Sobjoy,
No, you don't need to touch the suspension arm. Jack the rear up and put it on axle stands. Use a sharp point and clear out the insides of the Torx bolts (6 on each end) securing the drive shaft to the diff on one side and the rear of the hub on the other.  Make sure there's no debris or dirt on the insides of the Torx or the torx bit will not seat fully inside the bolt - and then the bit will break. You need a very good quality T-40 torx bit. Believe me, a cheapo from the market will not cut it - the bolts are very tight. undo both sets of Torx bolts and the drive shaft pulls out.

See http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/transgen.htm for the full monty manual and torque details.
