Hi all, Im in the process on deciding which engine to replace my 2.0 pinto with in my 1971 transit. Im looking at a 2.3Dohc16v out of a scorpio! I'd really love a 24vV6 but its a daily driver so MPG is an issue so i thought the 2.3 was a good compromise!
Is there anything you lot know of that would stop me doing this Ie the engine managment needs an abs or gearbox sensor or anything of that nature. Id use a MT75 transit box i presume this will bolt up to the block as its the same as the 2.0dohc8V (i think ???) also id be able to use standard transit mk3 dohc engine mountings?
Any tips which may help/ hinder me greatly appreciated!

Ah i see.......
There may be a problem.... vehicle speed sensor (VSS) pinion! :(
I presume this is on the wheel hub? and i wouldnt have one? what exactly is it?

hi there

the Vehicle Speed Sensor is on the side of the gearbox. it lets the car's ecu know what speed the car is doing amongst other things. as you can see, you need to take over all sensors etc. it's do-able with a bit of effort.

others might know more about it than me.

There is a more radical solution in that you can use the 2.3 from the Scorpio and scrap the ECU and the injection system and replace it with an aftermarket system.
From reading the car custom magazines I see that there are quite a few companies now doing custom injection and engine management systems for a wide range of engines that would normally have a manufacturers PCM ECU. Try the kit car magazines as a starting point but they seem to be around £600 and fully tunable with a laptop on a rolling road.

Depends whether your conversion is just to keep an old van on the road or whether it's part of a more exotic project.

Have you thought about trying the old Granada 2.8 v6 with carbs instead of injection system ,i am also lead to believe the later 2.9 can be used this way as well ,we used to have the V6 in a transit rally service barge and it was excellent ,and not sure why perhaps because it was manual but it was more econimacal than my granada ghia which had same lump ,obviously it will use more fuel than a 2.3 ,but the conversion costs should be less ,thats providing you can source a new front grill for the v6 model

Problem there Colin will be the ignition system as the 2.9 doesn't have a distributor but an ECU controlled coil system. You'd have to go back to the old Essex engine or possibly the early Cologne engine.

The EEC-IV equipped versions (Granada) might be far easier to adapt for this application however but I'd suggest that the EEC-V (ie Scorpio) range would be a bit of a nightmare.

Steve i didnt realise that ,as i say wasnt sure about the later ones ,but we had the cologne 2.8 in ours in actual fact it was capri 2.8i but with a different manifold and carbs fitted ,and that thing was brilliant loads of power for the transit and trailer but i seem to remember having to do something with the grill arrangment .as our mk1 had the very early 2l v4 in it

You do have to swap the front grill (and bonnet) over when performing this conversion, but you have too to get the pinto in aswell, but i have a mk2 front end conversion any way so space isnt a problem :)
I'd prefer to stay away from a V6 engine due to the mpg - even though it'd be a far better drive!
The conversion isnt to keep 'an old van on the road' its a totally mint rust free shell so its worth a bit of hassle to get it perfect!
Im thinking the speed sensor might fit from a scorpio 2.3 gearbox might fit onto a transit mt75 box? do 2.3 scorpios have the mt75 box aswell? unless i have to strip the box to fit a pinion or something for the sensor to pick up on, into the transit box? then its getting a bit too much hassle for me when i could just pop in a sierra 2.0dohc8v engine for a lot less trouble! What do you think? ::)

TVM.... A mint, rust-free shell?

I say keep it as a Mk1.

I suppose you must have the petrol front end rather than the diesel type. I'm sure the diesel-front ones can take a Pinto ok.

Have you got any photos of it?

Too late its mk2 ;D they look meaner anyway!! Try buying mk1 panels :o
Im in the process of a full shell respray its 95% ready for the paint (ford mercury grey ;D) Ill post up some piccys when a get it back from the paint shop - hopefully before the new year!
I only asked my origanal question so if it does fit i can start collecting parts for the conversion - wont be untill the earlyest next summer!! ;D

I don't think you will get much better fuel economy from the 2.3 anyway so you might aswell go all the way and have the 2.8/2.9 option.

Im not sure but my van only weights 1300kg ish so its not that much heavyer than a scorpio! I allready have a 250BHP mk1 escort so i dont need another fast vehicle! and i also have a mk1 transit pickup diesel i dont want to be never using the van cos i cant even get 20mpg out of it the diesel tranny does 30-35 easy!
What mpg does a 2.3 scorpio do?

I get about 18-20mpg around town and just over 28 on a run and about 22 when towing the caravan.

Stick in the 2.9l 24v and convert it to run on LPG. No loss of performance and good consumption figures. My cossie does 4 miles to the litre on gas and at 29.9p per litre, that works out at 7.5 pence per mile..... fantastic. Oh and no congestion charges either!!!

LPG is defenatly something i'd consider but there arent many petrol stations around me that sell the stuff! also my mate has an omega 2l that runs on lpg he has nowt but hassle off it when it runs on gas! It kinda put me off abit - also you need a big tank - unless i could mount it under the floor!

Looking at those figures like you say the 2.016v looks the easyest solution!

LPG CONVERSIONS ALL DEPEND ON HOW GOOD THE KIT IS THERE ARE A LOT OF CHEAP COWBOYS ABOUT FITTING OLDER KITS. IF YOU DO IT PAY A LITTLE MORE AND GET IT DONE RIGHT WITH THE LATEST KIT ;D

Eddie, Got myself a 1.4 Peugeot 306 instead and have S.O.R.N.ed the Scorp for the winter. Makes sense now i'm working in Bryncethin.
