Title: Self Levelling Suspension - Facelift
Post by proberjohn on Dec 4th, 2004, 4:38pm
As it appears that any link between the handbook and the car itself is coincidental on my facelift Ultima estate can anyone confirm that it has the self levelling rear suspension?

I was trying to find out why my heated mirrors and 1/2 heated windscreen don't work when I found that there is no fuse or relay in the Auxilliary Fusebox for the air compressor.

It's too wet to get under the car to see what's on the suspension units.

Regards

John B.

hi there

have a read of the handbook again....
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/handbook078.gif

the air compressor it refers to is for the earlier estates, just to add to the confusion. ???

heated mirrors elements as well as windscreens wear out after some time. might need replacing, but check fuses first.

John,
Estates have self-levelling suspension as standard - see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/specifications.htm (and it was a cost-option on saloons,) so yours should have SL Nivomat rear suspension.
One way to check is to load the rear deck up with some heavy items and measure the height of the rear wheel arch from the ground, then start the engine and check the level again after 4 minutes or so. This has the added advantage of checking that the Nivomat is actually working.
Another way to check is to look for the little body-height sensor mounted on the nearside rear suspension.

Before you add any relays into the Auxilliary fusebox next to the battery, best check whether the SL suspension is actually working first.
The heated windscreens can fail because of shocks by objects hitting the glass and they are not repairable, so you would need to buy a new windscreen. The heated mirrors on my car work with the rear screen heater switch, not the front, IIRC.

Hi John,

It seems that the last facelift Scorpios got fitted with whatever was left in the parts bin. My 98 2.3 facelift Ultima estate does not have self-levelling suspension. I have loaded it up on a couple of occasions, and the rear end remained low (bit like the missus). I have also checked underneath and the shocks look standard to me, but I will check for the sensor thingy that admin mentioned.
