Every time I put the heater on in my 2.3 Scorpio the windows mist up almost immediately. If I put the air con on it clears pretty quickly but I'm a bit concerned that my heater matrix might have a slight leak. I haven't seen any water inside the car but I do have to top up the cooling system every month or so. Am I worrying over nothing?

dont know if this is relevent,but i keep the aircon on all the time,ok uses a little more juice,but i thought on the ultima it was designed to be used all of the time....

and yes i never get the windows steamed up....
well only when parked up ;) ;)

Mine sometimes mists a bit with the initial turn-on, but you should find it clears straight away.

As Craig says, it's meant to be used all the time. In fact they recommend in the manual at least 30 minutes a month. In order for that to happen, the default setting is ON.

If yours is like this, I wouldn't worry too much. It sounds pretty normal.

Craig... good job those windows are tinted eh? ;)

Hi Nodge,

You heater matrix has a leak.
You should also able to smell anti-freese from the coolant. (it´s like smell of curry)

You can try HOLTS Raveld to fix it, but i recoment to flush you system on next day. That prevent the remaining Raveld blocking your matrix.

on ebay there is some stuff called rainX with anti fog built in. I never have misty windows inside or out because I use this to clean my windows. But don't get mixed up with the RainX that has not got the anti fog in. It also makes your wiper rubbers glide across the screen without that scaping noise.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious but have you checked that the drain tubes are clear? Mine used to do this a year ago before I unblocked them.

That RainX is good stuf, you savea fortune on window wipers and when driving at 70mph+ you don't need them at all.

My diy advice on the matrix is...

1. Get a permanent marker pen and mark the level of the engine water when cold. Check after a day or two and see if any change.

2..After using aircon and you turn it off the window does tend to find the moisture anyways due to the extra moisture in the blown air.. just leave the aircon alone for a few days and see how you go.

i agree with dave. the most common reason for steaming of the windows is blocked drain pipes. The one way valves at the ends of the tubes get filled with black gung and prevent them from functioning properly, so that everytime you turn the blower on it kicks out a load of foul smelling stagnant water vapour onto the screen. Mine was so bad i HAD to turn the aircon on just to clear the screen and keep it cleared. then i cleaned the drainpipes and valves and now all is well. It even got to the point where u cud hear it gurgling when you turned the blower on :O bad! lol

You're talking to a novice here guys - which drain tubes would they be and where are they?

hi mate,one thing to try is to replace the pollen filters,i have had this problem on many cars,mondeo,vectra e.t.c (taxis)what happens is the filters clog and the car gets no air :P,let us know if this solves your probs,,,gaz

The drain tubes refered to are on the bulk head under the bonnet there are two black tubes with little red flaps over the ends they can be seen in this picture here
