Title: Poor Cold Start TD
Post by neil_goulsbra on Dec 22nd, 2004, 7:11pm
I have recently got a M reg 2.5 TD and have replaced 1 cylinder head on it Due to the cooling system presurising. I don't know what the car was like before as I bought the car with this fault from ebay. The thing is, it is a sod to start, it smokes like a chimney (grey smoke) and also smokes when hot. I know there is 1 glow plug out which I will replace tommorow. But I would like to know if these cars do suffer with very poor running and miss fire for about the first 4-5 seconds of starting when there is only 1 glow plug down or do I have another problem with the car? :-[

with a diesel there are a few things that could be wrong. If its a sod to start from cold turn the key  to warm the plugs up a few times. if this is better then glo plugs are on their way out. as for the smoking , on start up it shud be blackish in colour.  Most older diesels will smoke to sum extent  and the higher the mileage the worse it will be. again as long as its not white/blue then its just normal wear and tear. aldo when you did the head  did you check the static timing to make sure all is well? Failing that get a pressure test done on all of the clyinders to see if the rings are shot.

   HTH

Cheers Nick ;)

having 1 or more duffed heater plugs certainly wont help ususally results in a lumpy rough start with smoke until the cold cylinder warms up a bit. but in my exp that lasts 10 seconds max after start.   smoke all the time isnt a good sign.  how many miles has it done?

There are about 169000 miles on the clock but this is not the original engine. I know this as when I give the local Ford dealer the reg number and they order some engine parts for me they do not fit.
