Title: Drop in power... Post by Vulcan on Dec 23rd, 2004, 12:13am Ok was proceeding in a quite normal manner at 50mph along the dual carraigeway when suddenly there was a... blip... like fuel starvation.. almost as if the box had found another lower gear and dropped into it.. only lasted a second or two then it picked up. It seemed to be a one off so dismissed it. 3 mins later it did it again!! :o Stopped at the chippy and got the required sustenance for the family... it did it twice more on the way home (5 miles) Anyone any ideas where to start...? The fuel did drop REALLY low last week (16 miles left on the computer) and I did think maybe I pulled some sludge from the bottom... |

Title: Re: Drop in power... Post by Baz on Dec 23rd, 2004, 12:27am Vulcan, I've had this problem for a few weeks. On mine I think we have narrowed it down to a dodgy egr valve and the OBD scan seems to back this up with an 0402 code. Have you a lead you could check for any codes with? Baz |

Post by Vulcan on Dec 23rd, 2004, 12:32am Don't have the odb lead, got all the required laptops (any number I can borrow from work) Downloaded the software for the odb and played a bit but didn't understand much (loaded some other peoples scans from the site) Is the egr valve easy to find and replace? |

Title: Re: Drop in power... Post by Baz on Dec 23rd, 2004, 12:43am Vulcan, if you have the 24v it is a plenum off job I'm afraid. It is the mushroom shaped thing at the back of the engine. I have my replacement on the floor at my office ready for the install in the new year! Baz |

Then in the past few weeks it has started again. The power just drops of and the car appears to misfire then picks up and everythingh is fine for anothr few days. Mind you mine hasn't done it for over a week now Baz |

Ok I'll run with it for a while and see how it develops... The only thing I can relate it to was when I had my old cavalier and the injectors blocked... it ran then stuttered.. then ran ok then stuttered and eventually stopped. I had the same stomach sinking feeling tonight. |

Post by john.n on Dec 23rd, 2004, 11:40am Hi George, I was just reading this post and it struck me that it may be the idle valve that Charlie cleaned when you collected the car. Not a mechanic, but i seem to remember him taking it off and squirting it with carb cleaner. Regards, john.n |

Post by Vulcan on Dec 27th, 2004, 3:56pm It's still doing it :-[ Don't think it's the idle valve John as it is perfectly stable when idling, looked at the main site and I have a feeling it's as Baz says and it's the EGR valve. How much is one of these jobbies, will FMD still supply it and how hard is taking off the plenum to replace it? Are there any exploded diagrams on the site of the area in question? cheers George |

It's odd but the car only seems to do its power loss trick now after I drive slowly over a speed bump, it stutters just after. Also when I pull onto my drive which is fairly steep it does it too. I noticed that the TCS off light flickers while it does it ??? I have been running it very low on fuel these days with never more than 50 miles on the trip computer, xmas and cash flow I'm afraid. Is there anybody within 50 or so miles of Newcastle on Tyne with an ODB lead and the knowledge of the software that would be prepared to read my car? |

Post by Mmonster on Dec 28th, 2004, 2:26pm Hi, In 24V model there is 4 lambdas. 2 just under exhaust manifolds, before cats(located in downpipes) and very hard to see without mirror. Cables to these lambdas are secured to the engine mountings and you will found the connector if you follow the cable. Use mirror to check that insulation of cables are ok in the point where cable connects to the lambda sensor. Another 2 are after cats under the car, but these not efect the engine itself. Another possible could be fuel pump mains, but this is totaly quess. Maybe it´s best to connect by ODB and check the code. Good luck, Mmonster |
