Title: Scorpio 2.3l: Problems with brakes
Post by madkiss on Dec 25th, 2004, 11:04pm
Hello all,

i'm encountering problems with my Ford Scorpio 2.3 again. When I brought it to some local tire-dealer to mount brandnew winter-tires and got it back, the car suddenly started to vibrate everytime I brake. Well, not the whole car, actually, but the steering at least, and it's pretty obvious that the car is kind of vibrating if you are sitting on the co-pilot's seat. The stronger you break, the more heavy the vibrating is. Again, the Scorpio only started to do it when I got the winter-tires mounted. Any ideas on what might cause this?

Thanks in advance, i'm truly desperated about this ...

they almost certainly havent balanced the wheel properly. take it back to where it was fitted and request that they balance it for you.  If you are confident that it is a direct result of the new tyre being fitted. also before you go anywhere check all the wheel nuts have been put back on and that they are tight.  (better safe than sorry).

Mike.

there is a possibility of a loose wheel nut, and as mentioned bad balancing if any, but you mentioned vibration during breaking which would point towards the break discs warped.

And this wouldnt be to uncommon I had to replace mine it is a easy job.

I indeed _am somewhat sure that this is some kind of effect caused by the new wheels because it only started when they got mounted (I guess I should have mentioned that I got new rims together with the new tires...). We got the new wheels mounted on friday evening, and when my mother drove to the bakery's the next morning, she noticed the effect.

Hi,

You propably have locking washers for brake disks on wheel bolts. (one each disk) Some wheels do not have space for that washer and so they do not sit equal and will then vibrate when driving. Bushes will take that away in normal road, but when you brake...

You can safely remove these washers. Only purpose is to keep disks on plece when wheel is removed.

If you don´t have washers fitted, please check that you new wheels are for Scorpio model.

I have wintertyres on my car about 4 month in a year and dosent found problems from tyres... well you should not past max speed of the tyres.  ::)

Good luck,
Mmonster

Thanks for the reply. I never heard of these washers, and I don't even know how to find out whether they are there or not ... but I am somewhat sure that the tires  as well as the rims are made for the Scorpio (I have the certificate from german TÜV ['Technischer Überwachungsverein', a state-supported group that has to accredit each technical change to a car like changing the rims] lying next to me on my desk ...)

The retaining washer is #15 here,
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/rearbrakes.gif
These are used to hold the disc on while the wheel is off the car and it won't do any harm for you to remove these if they are fitted as the wheel will hold it all in place when it is on the car. I can see what Mmonster is saying but if you do not have these fitted then i would go for a re-balance or warped disc's.

Hi folks ... Just a short note on what happened today about this issue. I brought the car to a local car garage, and they told me that the problem is nothing but the brake disks. Well, rather the part of the brake disks that is still there (minimum seems to be 22mm, and they currently have 21mm ...).

So indeed warped discs are the cause. Thanks for all help.

every single scorpio i have as had to have new steel brake discs. from when i obtained them.
My problems where slight juddering on steering upon light braking say at traffic lights.
If you brake harder it seemed to cancell this out.
On all four cars, new front discs, corrected this. no trace at all now.
I thinking this. That some people drive like a mad bat out of hell so do a lot of stamping on the brakes and they over-heat so warp or did I not read somewhere on this site about if you over-tighten the wheel nuts to tight that can warp the discs as well.

Now thats a curious thought, considering they are directly over the disc, I would still tighten the wheels somewhat  though.....I had a Mondeo and it also warped a new set of discs due to the fact that I was used to fly down slip roads at 70 or 80 and stand on them at the roundabout at the bottom they didnt stand a chance....warped them on the second day I was out, I read here that they have to bedded in and driven easy for a couple of hundred miles which I have done now ::) and now I have flawless breaking on my Scorpio with new discs, not a shake at near full breaking, I had to break full on a couple of occastions.

But put in new discs, bed them in, give them time to harden and walaaa, good breaks.

I got to distrust everyone nowadays. (except myself that is).
I do my wheel-nuts up with a torgue wench. (yes you are right, got it off E-bay). In fact there are lots of these on E-bay all the time.
So as soon as I get home I slacken these off and re-do these.
The correct figures are in the back of the handbook.
Did you know that if you take your wheel in for a new tyre, they will charge you cheaper, than if you take your car in and they have to remove the wheel off the car.
I got a spare set of alloy wheels in my outhouse and I take these in and say fit new tyres please, then put the wheels on the car myself when I get home.
Of course I more or yes stand over them, and as soon as they start to put on the new tyre, I say, what you doing, when they stand their with their mouth open, I say clean the rims, both side spotless before you fit that tyre.
