Title: Throttle body on a 2.3i...
Post by Phil_Waller on Dec 29th, 2004, 10:35am
Hi all!

In my quest to get this missfire sorted I took the plunge yesterday and started cleaning and working my way back from the air intake..

Cleaned the MAF (again) cleaned the plastic pipes etc and worked back to the throttle body - when I sprayed the inside of it with carb cleaner is was filthy..

I then remembered my trusty mechanic mentioning that the 2.0 and 2.3 I4 engines suffer badly from build up in the throttle body.. Well I have to say on first impressions are that it is dirty. I couldnt get too much cleaned so think I need to take it off.

Any advice on removing the throttle body before I start?

P

Hi Phil,

Have you checked for any Error Codes? May be worth doing before you start taking things apart. A duff sensor could easily screw up your MPG ??? or show up many electrical faults.

hi there

just a word of caution. on mine, it has a sticker telling you NOT to clean the inside as it's coated in something. not sure what, though.

Hi - yes thats correct. What that means is that the inside of the body is a coating that helps air pass through in a uniform manner. A strong cleaner (other than carb cleaner will removed the film...

As for OBD - yes you are right - it has been done a few months back and I am just waiting for Eric to give me the heads up for the next go..

I wouldnt normally be bothered but it was really filthy.. and I hate things like that...

Haha yeah Baz - you know that hehe

Ahem, gonna clean it this weekend. My father has some very specialist cleaning solutions for jewelery etc I may use that.

Funny that the WSM for the 2.3 engine doesnt cover the removal of the throttle body...

hi phil

while looking for something else, i found this.... http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/HowDoI/Howdoi.html

not sure if i would do all it says, but it seems a good clear guide.

I have done the doo..

I have removed the throttle body - totally cleaned it an removed the offending screw threads and filed down the screw heads.

I cant believe how dirty the whole thing was. I am shocked to be honest. The carbon build up is alarming.

Anyway mine is as clean as a whistle - I am taking it for a drive in a bit and will let you all know what happends!!

Phil,
Cleaning the throttle body won't do any harm. It does tend to get a bit grimy because of PCV - Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Basically, modern engines are not allowed to vent the crankcase to atmosphere because of emissions control. Blow-by gasses and oil fumes in the crankcase now have to be extracted by inlet depression through a valve into the air filter chamber, so that the fumes can be burned during the combustion cycle.  Unfortunately, this means that the air entering the cold throttle body is not as clean as it could be, and moisture/fumes can settle out and after a long time build up grime on the throttle body, as well as the throttle butterfly and IACV.  The grime near the throttle plate more usually causes a 'hang throttle' where the engine rpm does not fall as swiftly as it should, making autochanges harsh, or difficulty in changing manual gears smoothly - this is where the throttle butterfly 'sticks' partly open.

If you still have a misfire, have you tried checking the Fuel Cutoff Loom? DOHC engines are prone to heat degradation in the FCO loom and this has caused misfiring on many owners' cars. See http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm

Cheers Eric,

As discussed on the phone.. The early indications are good. I have noticed a considerable difference in the whole behavior of the car. It idles better and cruises better with that all important higher instantaneous fuel consumption.

Will go to the Herts meet tomorrow and then bring round for an OBD check...

I have to say that I am sure this has improved the engine whether the MPG is better I dont know but I think it is!

I am going to put an article together to cover this but it is well worth doing!

hi there

having posted the link for cleaning the throttle body, i thought i'd better clean it as well! first problem was i couldn't get it off :( are the screws/bolts T30's? anyway, i'll work on that one. so i have a look inside. as phil says, it was filthy. only option was to spray into the body and manifold and clean with a rag. mostly done with the engine OFF ;), just running it to burn off any remains. i haven't tried it yet, but hopefully i'll get the same results as phil.

this might be the next 'MAF CLEANING' ;D for the 12 & 16 valve engines, anyway. not sure how easy it would be on the 24 valve.

I think an important point has been missed here, WHY the throttle body is so dirty, also applies to ICV & MAF problems.

Crankcase breather filters! Check the one in your Airbox is clean/intact. AND dont run without an air filter--ever!

hi eddie

fair point. when i said it was filthy, i was meaning the inside. outside wasn't too bad. i'm running an induction kit, so it should stay clean for a while now.

btw, i still plan to remove it and do the mods later.

What type of induction kit? Where does the crankcase breather hose go?

If this is fed into the induction system WITHOUT a filter of any kind then oil mist etc can be drawn in and cause a long term fouling of the MAF etc.

hi eddie

it's just a cheap filter. the breather vents to air via a small filter. what i will say is that the engine seems to like it. might be something to do with the lpg or being cat-less, but it seems to be running as sweet as a nut just now ( asking for trouble now).;D

Update:

Two things since I did this..

One, I got a bollocking from my trusty mechanic who said that using Carb cleaner would have removed the film on the inside of the throttle cylinder..
Maybe, maybe not.. It idles better and I have noticed an improvement in things in general plus the amount of carbon built up has to have made a difference

Two, had a look at it all today and it is still lovely and clean..
