'95 2.5 tdi est
Hi, my first post so I'll keep it shortish.
My brother borrowed my car for a few days only to tell me a few hours ago the brakes and steering had failed, the engine won't start, the main drive/pulley belt had come off and there was a large patch of black engine oil dripping down from the near side steering rack! Nothing else........ Oh and he thinks the water pump sprocket is the wobbly one!
I'm calling to see the car tomorrow, I've sussed out the steering/alternator failure, but the brakes? Also why was there a large patch of oil underneath the car?
I've had the car troublefree for 6 months so I've been a bit slack in checking out how it works, I've read a little at this late hour about the alternator, connected to a vacuum pump and oil pipes? What's going on there? Can anyone help me on this one? Jeez, it's looking like I may be a frequent writer to this forum....Thanks!

Erm... Best Case

Well it may only need a new fan belt.

Unless the pulley wobbles because the water pump bearings have failed in which case you may get away with a new pump.

Brakes and steering pretty ropey if the engine is not running.

Engine wont run if battery too flat to turn over or energise glowplugs.

Hope it is just belt adjustment and charge of battery.

But.........

You need to investigate source of oil leak. If lost contents of engine sump and engine seized that is going to hurt.

Hopefully 2005 won't treat you that badly.

Hi Mate, I drive a 2.5td aswell, the brake, strg and alternator failure are due to the auxilary drive belt failure. It sounds like the vibration damper on the bottom pulley has failed, causing the belt to come off. The oil is the worrying bit. It sounds like the bottom pully has put a hole in a part of the engine. This has happened to my 2.5TD on at least two occasions. Once the Vibration Dampers within the Crankshaft Pulley failed, the other, the alternator failed
(mechanically). Both resulted in the belt being thrown off
giving the symptoms you describe.
On each occasion, a pool of oil was discovered under the engine. This is a temporary problem and should return to normal when the root cause is fixed.
I suspect it's due to the engine remaining turning whilst the Alternator (and hence the Vacuum Pump) has stopped. The oil is just a build up that doesn't appear to get returned to the sump. I think it is pushed past the return pipe.

Thanks for the replies. The cause of the belt coming off was either the tension adjuster bracket having slight play in it ( Is that normal?) or the water pump pulley, which has worked loose giving 3-4mm of lateral and forward movement. There are metal fillings around so the pulley is shafted, is the pulley a renwable part or is the water pump a complete part? Ideas ?
I'm releived to hear the oil loss is maybe not that serious, after being prepared for a head gasket job or even worse due to oil dripping down from the right face of the block.
The pump on the alternator is the main oil pump?? Did I misread that? Is lubrication dependent upon that little pump? Would damage occur if the engine had run for30 seconds after the belt had worked loose? Thanks.

Sounds like your water pump may well be seized ::)!!
The pulley is a seperate item. Take off the pump and check it out.
