Title: misfiring /chuffing24v
Post by colinw on Jan 1st, 2005, 1:16pm
Hi guys  my 24v est seems to be suffering a misfire around the 2500 rev mark but only under load i cannot seem to get it to do it whilst sat in park /nuetral ,the misfire is also  accompanied by an increase in noise as though the exhaust is blowing ,its a sort of chuffing noise sorry about description but i have a hearing problem,2 weeks ago i needed a new nearside cat because old had broken up ,i have run a obd on it but dont really know how that works ,but the only error that showed up was bank 2 sensor 2 high voltage p0158 if memory is correct ,i think i can hear air somewhere but im not sure because of other normal noises ,could it be egr related!! ,it appears normal higher up rev range but noise is definitly increased under acceleration ,ive been back to exhaust centre and no leaks were found ,any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi,

When my CAT collapsed (24v) it effectively blocked the downstream exhaust middle section (baffles) and caused similar problems.

You can try dropping the middle (and end if original) section to shake out the debris but few have had much success but it's worth a go.

Tony thanks for the reply ,did the blockage on yours show up immediatly after the cat broke up ,only mine was perfect for about 1k miles after the cat was replaced ,then just started this problem ,car still seems to cruise ok higher up rev range ,but does not seem to have much low down pull

thanks for replies guys ,bad boy i will get leads checked  the cats have been replaced and problem has occured since ,so maybe it is the exhaust that has blocked ,but i cant see why it has taken around 1k miles to show up tho, there are no error codes apparant ,
probably get somebody to look at it on tues /weds if i have no luck ,

thanks for that offer unfortunatly i am in Somerset ,and getting under the thing is not that easy for me ,lambas were replaced around 15k ago when engine was rebuilt ,
how can i tell if the rest of system is blocked when it is removed ,will it be obvious ,because it appears to go straight into a silencer,
thanks again for your assistance

Hello Colinw

Take the excaust pipe away from car. (itīs rather easy)
Undo 4 bolts from flangers under the car and then release 6 rubber mountings. (Please do not work under car without proper support)

Now lift the pipe upwards and shake. If you hear something loose inside, keep shaking and turning untill you get the parts out.
Note: The pipe is straight, so itīs possible to push ex. garden hose thru it.

(if you live an area where you neibors are not near, you can test to drive without pipe. Sound is great after 3500rpm  ;D )

Yes it took sometime for the effects to show and for me got progressively worse as the ceramic packed down inside the middle silencer (which is a series of baffles). In the end a s/hand rear section sort of sorted but others seem to have managed to shake out the debris.
