Hi Guys,

I've had my 'R' plate 2.3 Ghia auto-estate for a couple of months with very few problems.

All of a sudden the speedo has stopped working and once the box needs to change into 2nd it does so with a thump and the O/D light starts to flash.

Could the O/D light flashing related to the speedo not working or is it the MAF problem as mentioned on other posts?

How easy is it to change the speedo cable?

Any help would be much appreciated.

hi-no speedo cable to change.faults could be related to a faulty VSS unit/or wiring to unit,as this gives signal to speedo etc.hth

Hi,

A faulty VSS is probably your answer. It's fitted to the gearbox but is an easy job with a ramp.
Search the main site, all you need to know is there ;)

before you go to expense of changing VSS try cleaning maf first mine played up a few months ago put a new vss made no difference mine turned out to be a faulty (dirty )MAf ,im not saying its not the VSS but its cheaper to try maf clean first

Mike,
Although it's always a good idea to check that the MAF is clean, in this case I think it will be the VSS, since the MAF would not effect the speedo.
Look at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/electrical/intbasic/VSS.pdf for changing the VSS. ;)

Cheers Guys,

Once you mentioned the letters VSS the alarm bells started to ring! I recently fitted an after market stereo to the car and remember coming across a VSS pin when trying to get the stalk control to talk to the stereo. On the yellow 6-way connector.

Turns out it had broken off the crimp connector (probably because of my bu*gering about with it) and was shorted to GND !

Problem now sorted.

i beg to disagree mate back last year i left my car for three days at airport ,when i got back started it up and on driving noticed power steering heavy ,and speedo not working also gearchanges rough,following day into garage new VSS fitted ,absolutly no difference to car at all ,i pin checked all wiring from gearbox loom back ,all ok ,messed about looking at diagrams etc for a cuople of days ,and out of frustration i thought i would clean maf a cuople of good squirts of carb cleaner ,hey presto speedo, power steering ,gearchanges perfect ,that was last easter and all been fine since,i am not saying it the maf but i am saying dont rule it out
