Title: No reverse?
Post by Vulcan on Jan 11th, 2005, 8:29am
Hi, a couple of weeks ago when sitting in a supermarket car park I selected reverse to move out of the bay. All I got was a grumbling feeling (noise?) like the autobox was full of marbles and very little drive. I cycled the gears a few times and selected reverse and all was ok.

I did the gearbox oil check that weekend, doing it the recommended way cycling the gears when the box was hot etc and the oil was up to the max level, nice red colour and smelled of very little at all.

The problem didn't recur and the car drives perfectly in forward gears though I did notice that reverse was taking a second or two to engage.

This morning it did it again, trying to reverse off my drive I got the same odd grumbling and little drive, cycling the gears this time made it better but not perfect and it grumbled all the way onto the road. When I got to work (6 miles) the car was hot and I reversed into my space... it seemed ok but I wasn't sure whether it was dodgy or not.... maybe because I had a heightened awareness expecting something wrong.

I cleaned the maf and the idle valve the same weekend that I checked the gearbox oil.

Anyone got any ideas what this is?

It sounds like the gearbox solenoids are maybe a bit intermittent, or sensors gone adrift.

Any way I can check the gearbox solonoids? Where exactly are they and are they easily replaced.
I don't have an ODB facility.

A similar thing happened to me a few months ago,i had just left a friends garage, tried to turn around but no reverse, anyway I got them to push me back and I found all forward gears OK.
I drove to an autobox specalist again they could not select reverse then we when on a test drive and keep try to get reverse and it finally worked.
The autobox spec told me an explaination,He tought it was some contamination possibly from breakup of autobox filter.
The next day they did a  tranmission service changed ATF and filter.been nice and smooth eversince and no probs.
The old filter was fully intact.

Cheers urbanracer, I'll sort out getting the autobox serviced. The car needs a full service anyway so I'll get this done at the same time, I have to replace the front wishbone bushes (so I am told by my mechanic) so it looks like a bit of Scorp TLC is in the offing.  :D

Vulcan,

My old Exec did the same reverse shudder, not much go thing. I found (after driving into spaces I HAD to reverse out of) that if I switched off the ignition, then restarted with a little throtle (say to 2500rpm), then let it return to idle, reverse would then engage fine. Maybe it built a little more oil pressure in the box but I scraped it before I worked it out (one of many faults :()
Might be worth a try if it does fail at an inconvenient moment :o
Also I think it only ever did it on the first engagement of any journey and continued 'till I'd do the restart. Then it would be fine untill the car was switched off :-/

HTH

Yep it now seems to be only the first engagement of reverse, immediately after starting the car that you get this syndrome.
After moving for a bit it seems fne... the argument for a build up of pressure seems to hold good here...
I'll get the autobox fluid and filter changed and see if it makes a difference... won't be for a week or so though till I can find the spare spondoolics to do it so the Beast is on the drive and I'm using Kerry's 1.6 Orion to go to work.
I don't want to make worse anything that may be going wrong.. :o

Ok, quick question here. The reverse is ok 8 times out of 10, it will be a couple of weeks before I can get the Scorp serviced... would I be doing any lasting damage by driving it the 6 miles or so to work and back every day or should I lay it up till I can get it sorted?

Hi,
If the partially blocked filter theory holds to be the problem, driving her could cause damage, in theory, as a higher pressure needs to built before the filter (so to speak) to reach working pressure after it.
IMO not worth the risk if, as you say, you have alternative transport.
