Title: Exhaust on cosworth.
Post by johnv on Jan 11th, 2005, 10:06pm
Calling all cosworth owners.
Can you experts help me with this please.
On this 1998 Cosworth Estate I obtained last June only done 60,000 miles I needing advise on the following.
No 1.
After a run when I switch the engine off, I get a cooling down clacking noice from under the bonnet. I thinking its the heat shied above the exhaust manifold.
Is like a clack then you wait and it does it again then you wait and it does it again until it cools down.
I hoping you all are going to tell me yours does that as well.
If not I better get it looked at.
No 2.
About half way or a little further down,  on the left under the car, I sometimes get a ticking noise from inside the exhaust while driving.
I also had a loss of power but not a hugh amount, about three time in the 2000 miles I have done since I owned it.
Is this my cat beginning to break up. I read the posting on this matter and I begining to think that I maybe starting to have this problem.
No 3.
If this is indeed the problem and I need a new exhaust. I done a print out of all the address that that person did on stainless steel exhaust. (sorry can't remember your name, but very helpful post).
Well can you have the entire exhaust made out of stainless steel. I seem to have read something about to the rear of the cats.
Thanks very much for any advice.

On every high performance car I've had (quite a few) when cooling down you would hear loud cracks from the engine area when cooling. Mostly this was put down to different alloys and metals cooling at different rates by knowledgable guys I knew... buy a big motorcycle.. drive it hard till hot then switch it off and hear it click and crack till it all cools and settles back.

The whole exhaust gets very hot on these cars and all cooling metal will make this sound..  to be honest when I was a biker we all used to swell with pride a bit as our bikes clicked and clacked there way down to cool... as we sat admiring them in pub car parks..seemed to say that you had driven it HARD and now it was settling down.

Yeah I would not worry to much Johnv.
Sounds all within normal running, power loss must have been a fair bit for you to notice it.
Maybe a problem starting maybe not.
Bad/dirty petrol, ECU adjusting it's self & the list goes on . . . .
Just Keep an eye on it.

The rattle does sound like it could be the ceramics breaking up in the cat, or a loose piece floating around in the pipe. These can block or cause partial blockage of the exhaust system and could be the reason for partial loss of power. If it is the cat then it should show up on an emissions test.  Alternatively if you have access to an obd2 lead than a reading of the forward and rear lambda sensors should reveal any cat problem. When replacing the cat the rest of the pipe will also have to be removed and any debris cleared from the system.

thanks to all and the discription of Vulcan about it being a loud cracking noise is spot on.
The 2.3 cars don't do that.
I also don't drive hard I drive my cosworth like a hearse, which,  (yes, I know) defeats the object of having a cosworth.

I understand your concern regarding the clacking noise, this can be a little disconcerting if you have not experienced it before. As vulcan says its quite normal, i have had several cossies and they have all done it. john.n ;)

A lot of noise also comes from the heatshielding underneath !  Next time your under there give the heatshield a couple of taps the noise is really horrible-sounds like the proverbial empty vessel-CLANG! :o

It can also be the source of a lot of buzzing and rattling if the edges have been bent out of shape--worth checking.

John,

You don't need to worry about the ticking/clacking sound after you ran the car. My Cosworth does exactly the same thing and I think it's from the top of the engine (air intake system?) where the sound comes from. Obviously it is caused because of the difference in temperature that occurs between the different parts of the engine/drive train when the car is cooling down. Can't give you any advice on your other questions...

Greetings Hans
